Swiss Geoscience Meeting 2017

The 15th Swiss Geoscience Meeting is held in Davos on November 17-18. Our group will present the following posters:

  • Scarponi M, Hetényi G, Plomerová J, Solarino S, Berthet T, Baron L (2017) High resolution imaging of the Ivrea Geophysical Body: A receiver function and gravity approach.
  • Hetényi G, Pistone M, Náb?lek PI, Baumgartner L (2017) Lhasa Block partial melt zones: matching geophysical characteristics and petrological origin.
  • Hetényi G, Molinari I, Clinton J, Kissling E, Alparray Seismic Network Team, Alparray OBS Cruise Crew, Alparray Working Group (2017) The completed AlpArray Seismic Network.

German AlpArray SPP “MB-4D” started

The German component of the AlpArray program runs under a special program (SPP) of the German Science Foundation, under the title Mountain Building Processes in 4D. The first annual meeting was held in Potsdam on November 9-10, and hosted all German participants (and more) as well as a number of international AlpArray colleagues. More information on MB-4D can be found on their website: www.spp-mountainbuilding.de

Participation in the SERA Workshop

Shiba Subedi has participated at the workshop organized by SERA as part of the National Conference of the Community for Science Education, held in Bucharest, Romania from 2 to 4 November 2017. Shiba presented his work on Seismo@school in Nepal during the workshop. The aim of the workshop was not only to train school teachers but also to exchange expertise in earthquake education from around the world. Keynote speakers were invited from UK, Greece, France, Switzerland, Portugal, and Romania. More than 200 teachers have benefited from the workshop.

SERA (Seismology and Earthquake Engineering Research Infrastructure Alliance for Europe) is working to reduce the risk posed by natural and anthropogenic earthquakes based on innovative research and development projects. The next meeting will be held in London on 15-16 February 2018.

IvreaArray DOI

The IvreaArray seismic network (an AlpArray Complementary Experiment) installed earlier this year, now has a DOI and can be officially cited:

Hetényi G, Plomerová J, Solarino S, Scarponi M, Vecsey L, Munzarová H, Babuška V, Jedli?ka P, Kotek J, Colavitti L (2017) IvreaArray – an AlpArray Complementary Experiment. doi:10.5281/zenodo.1038209

Shiba Subedi joins our group

Welcome to Shiba Subedi who joins our research group this month.

Shiba arrives from Paris where he has completed his MSc degree at IPGP, followed by an internship at ENS. He now holds a Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship to focus on teaching seismology in Nepali schools. In this frame, we plan to test low-cost seismometers, to be installed in schools as teaching and data collection tools.
