PhD students on external funds: indemnity 1

PhD candidates funded by external sources (e.g., the FNS) who have a contract with UNIL, CHUV, or Unisanté may, under certain conditions, obtain an additional monthly allowance. This allowance (indemnité 1) helps compensate for the salary gap with graduate assistants and remunerates support activities related to teaching and research, as well as institutional activities (e.g., organizing conferences, supervising exams, grading student work).

The allowance, whose eligibility criteria and amounts are detailed in Directive 1.31 of the Directorate:

  • is paid directly by the institution, meaning it has zero impact on the budgets of faculties, sections, laboratories, or professors;
  • is not paid automatically at CHUV and Unisanté. Doctoral candidates will not receive it unless they explicitly apply for it and submit to their employing institution the documents justifying their request.

If you are a PhD candidate at CHUV or Unisanté, you can contact HR yourself to submit your request for access to the indemnité 1. However, experience shows that it is often still difficult to obtain and that refusals are frequent. This is why ACIDUL offers to handle this request on your behalf. The form below allows you to send us your request.

If you are a PhD candidate at UNIL, access to this allowance is generally automatic. If you are not receiving it even though you regularly carry out additional tasks that are not directly related to your PhD, do not hesitate to write to us (acidul@unil.ch).
