Kenny Lienhard joins the BISA team as doctoral researcher

On May 1, Kenny Lienhard joined the BISA team as doctoral researcher. He is a former student assistant and graduated from HEC Lausanne’s M.Sc. IS program in 2013. In his Master thesis, he developped a  systems theory approach for IS planning in hospitals, which has been applied in a field study and evaluated in expert interviews. Previously, he worked as a software developer at Legon Informatics Inc., where he collaborated with physicians from national and international hospitals in designing  mobile applications for routine patient care.

Kenny Lienhard will continue working on research topics related to IS planning and the innovative use of mobile technologies in the healthcare sector.

Collaborative cloud solutions for multi-level distribution channels – New CTI project

On April 1, 2014 the BISA lab started a two-year project funded by the Swiss Commission of Technology and Innovation (CTI) which focusses on collaborative cloud solutions for multi-level distribution channels. In this project,  we are going to conceptualize, implement and evaluate an innovative real-time sales planning and performance management approach (business innovation), which is realized as a collaborative cloud solution and takes advantage of in-memory and mobile technologies (technology innovation). The solution may be used by retailers, wholesalers / national sales organizations, and manufacturers either individually or together.

The BISA lab collaborates with two partners in this project, proaxia consulting group – an SAP partner and international corporate consultancy based in Switzerland – and CMT AG – a consulting company with expertise in sales training and coaching.

Swiss National Science Foundation Grant for Andrea Giessmann

Andrea Giessmann has won one of the highly coveted grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) in the Marie Heim-Vögtlin (MHV) program. Starting February 1, 2014, she changes jobs from the SAP Research Center in St. Gallen to the BISA lab at HEC Lausanne. Andrea is currently working towards her Ph.D degree in information systems, where her main research interests include cloud computing, platform as a service and platform-based business models.

Article on cloud enterprise software published

The article “From On-Premise Software to Cloud Services: The Impact of Cloud Computing on Enterprise Software Vendors’ Business Models” by Thomas Boillat and Christine Legner is one of five research papers in the Special Issue on Cloud Computing published by the Journal of Theoretical and Applied Electronic Commerce Research (JTAER).

Abstract:
Cloud computing is an emerging paradigm that allows users to conveniently access computing resources as pay-per-use services. Whereas cloud offerings such as Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud and Google Apps are rapidly gaining a large user base, enterprise software’s migration towards the cloud is still in its infancy. For software vendors the move toward cloud solutions implies profound changes in their value-creation logic. Not only are they forced to deliver fully web-enabled solutions and to replace their license model with service fees, they also need to build the competencies to host and manage business-critical applications for their customers. This motivates our research, which investigates cloud computing’s implications for enterprise software vendors’ business models. From multiple case studies covering traditional and ‘pure’ cloud providers, we find that moving from on-premise software to cloud services affects all business model components, that is, the customer value proposition, resource base, value configuration, and financial flows. It thus underpins cloud computing’s disruptive nature in the enterprise software domain. By deriving two alternative business model configurations, SaaS and SaaS+PaaS, our research synthesizes the strategic choices for enterprise software vendors and provides guidelines for designing viable business models.

“HEC Business Game” featured in a video

“HEC Business Game” is a capstone course for 3rd year Bachelor students, which allows them to review and apply the knowledge acquired during their studies in a serious game. A new video (in French) features the course and provides insights into curriculum design and students’ learning experience.

In a real-time business simulation game, students play as muesli manufacturers and have to define and defend their strategy on a dynamic market. Thanks to the suppport of University of Lausanne’s Fund for Pedagogical Innovation (FIP – Fonds de l’Innovation Pédagogique), HEC Business Game has been further extended to cover an additional financial analyst / investor’s role. In this role, students invest in the Muesli manufacturing companies and manage their investment portfolio on a dynamic financial market.

The next round of “HEC Business Game” will take place on February 13-17, 2014! More information is available on Moodle.

International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS 2013) – Three papers accepted

We are proud to announce that our three submissions were accepted at the Conference on Information Systems (ICIS):

  • Dynamics of IS Adaptation in Multinational Corporations: A New Theoretical Lens (Full research paper, co-authored by Kazem Haki and Christine Legner)
  • Designing Capstone Courses in Management Education: Knowledge Activation and Integration Using an ERP-based Simulation Game (Full research paper, co-authored by Christine Legner, Thibault Estier, Hazbi Avdiji and Thomas Boillat) and
  • Designing Business Models for Platforms as a Service – Towards a Design Theory (Research-in-progress, co-authored by Andrea Giessmann and Christine Legner).

Welcome to our new student assistants

The BISA lab welcomes two new student assistants who will help us conduct the lab’s research and teaching activities. Mariya Orlova will support the doctoral assistants for the Business Processes and Information Systems course (Bachelor 3rd year, fall semester) as well as for the HEC Business Game course (Bachelor 3rd year, spring). Gaël Bernard will be dedicated to the analysis, modeling and design in IS course (Master, spring) and he will support research activities such as the evaluation of cloud platforms. Mariya and Gaël are both pursuing the master of information systems.
