Welcome to the LALP project website!

Welcome to the website of the SNSF-funded research project “The Language of the Labouring Poor in Late Modern England”! This project started on 1 March 2020 with the PI Anita Auer, the PhD student Mark Iten and the student assistants Lucile Berset, Andrea Grütter and Aleksa Kostadinovic. The senior researcher Anne-Christine Gardner will join the team on 1 September 2020.

We are currently working through the pauper petitions at our disposal, i.e. we are (re)transcribing petitions from facsimiles, comparing and checking our transcriptions, and we are in the process of converting a number of petitions into plain text version. As soon as COVID-19 is over, we will visit a number of archives in the UK to collect more facsimiles.

We will keep you posted on our progress regarding the corpus creation and our research on this website. Stay tuned!
