The period 1750-1850 witnessed a surge in attention to the atmosphere – both on the part of artists and of scientists – which is powerfully reflected in representations of meteorological conditions using water-based media. This conference will investigate the intersection of weather observation and the practice of watercolour, through topics ranging from architectural and scientific drawing to colonial documentation and sketches by major landscape painters.
