ReproducibiliTea: Causal inference with observational data: benchmarking against RCTs with Dr. Anthony Matthews

Randomised trials are considered to be the “gold-standard” for evaluating causal effects, yet such trials are often unethical, expensive, or too time consuming. Therefore, researchers regularly rely on observational data to answer such questions. But how can we infer cause and effect from observational data?

In this session, Dr Anthony Matthews (Assistant Professor at the Karolinska Institutet) will describe how the target trial framework can be used to strengthen causal inference in observational research. This framework involves using applying the design principles of randomised trials to observational studies, to estimate the causal effect of an intervention. Dr Matthews will then discuss how observational analyses can be benchmarked against existing randomised trial results, to increase confidence in observational results.
