Publication: « Theatre in Early Modern Switzerland (1450–1650) »

Peterlang.

The history of Swiss theatre constitutes a particularly complex field of research, shaped by the linguistic, religious, and socio-cultural diversity that has long characterized the Swiss territories. The “long sixteenth century” represents a decisive phase: from 1450 to 1650, the performing arts took root and flourished across what is now Switzerland, from Zurich and Bern to Geneva, Neuchâtel and Lausanne, as well as in the central regions.

However, despite the vitality of these theatrical cultures, marked by strong regional specificities and close connections with the rest of Europe, this field of research remains insufficiently explored. Through ten complementary studies by leading specialists, this volume offers the first comprehensive analysis of the performing arts in Switzerland during this period of emergence and development, restoring their specific place within the broader history of Western theatre.

Open-access volume, available for free download.
