Mónica Castillo Lluch, professor in the Spanish Section of the Faculty of Arts, has been awarded Swiss National Science Foundation funding for the project “Digital Fuero Juzgo: a textual and dialectological study using computational philology”. The Romance version of Visigothic law, in force in Spain from 654 to 1889, the Fuero Juzgo survives in 40 medieval and 11 modern manuscripts whose text varies from copy to copy, both in content and in dialectal forms.
The project plans to transcribe 30 early manuscripts, some 8,000 pages of parchment, using handwritten text recognition (HTR), then to draw on computational resources at every stage of the workflow and on statistical tools for the dialectological study. The aim is to map how the text travelled across the Iberian peninsula and to prepare a critical edition presenting its two main versions side by side.
