Popularisé à la fin du 20e siècle, l’Anthropocène serait une nouvelle époque géologique, durant laquelle l’influence de l’être humain sur la biosphère aurait atteint un tel niveau qu’elle serait devenue une « force géologique » majeure. En août 2012, le 34e Congrès international de géologie, réuni à Brisbane, a discuté, entre autres points, de la possibilité d’officialiser cette nouvelle période. Mais encore aujourd’hui cette notion fait débat au sein de la communauté scientifique, notamment en ce qui concerne ses dates de début.
