Rethinking the metabolism

Metabolomics, along with lipidomics, is a powerful phenotyping technology. It allows us to measure polar and lipid metabolites with greater specificity and sensitvity than ever before! Using metabolomic approaches, we are uncovering previously unknown biological functions of well-known metabolites, getting new insights into metabolic signaling and pathway activity, and discovering new metabolites and metabolic pathways…

In brief, with metabolomics, we are revisiting the metabolism & building upon the acquired knowledge of biochemistry!

“There’s more to metabolites than metabolism; metabolites are perhaps the body’s most important signaling molecules”

David Wishart, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, Physiological Reviews 2019

“Unlike genes or proteins, metabolites are readily available, typically inexpensive and their relatively simple structures make them amenable for bioactivity screening and clinical applications”

Gary Siuzdak, The Scripps Research Institute, CA, USA, Nature Biotechnology 2018

  • Mass Spectrometry Grill
We enjoyed THE Mass Spectrometry Grill Lunch yesterday, bringing together mass spectrometrists from across the local Léman region, including colleagues from UNIL/CHUV, and EPFL. A BIG thank you to Laure Menin and her group for the initiative, and to everyone from the PAF at UNIL, and Proteomics Facility at EPFL, as well as the Spectroswiss…
  • Save the Date: Swiss Metabolomics Society Annual Meeting 2026
We are pleased to announce that the next Annual Meeting of the Swiss Metabolomics Society will take place on October 23, 2026, at Campus Biotech in Geneva. The scientific program will feature excellent keynote presentations, with Gunda Köllensperger (University of Vienna) and Tim Ebbels (Imperial College London) already confirmed as plenary speakers. Join the Swiss…
  • Mapping Serum Sphingolipids Across the Adult Lifespan
We are excited to share our latest publication in Communications Medicine, the result of an excellent collaboration with sports medicine physicians Justin Carrard and Arno Schmidt-Trucksäss! Special congratulations go to Justin Carrard, Head of the Sport & Youth Health Unit at CHUV, who led this project with remarkable dedication and enthusiasm. As lipidomics continue to…
  • Welcome to Maria!
We are happy to welcome Maria Lamprakopoulou, who joined our group in May as a PhD student! Maria holds an MSc in Pharmacy and brings great enthusiasm for analytical science and metabolomics. Her PhD project will focus on microbiome-derived lipids, from structural characterization to quantitative profiling across a diverse range of human biofluids. Her work…
  • Lipids capture the essence of our chemical individuality
Our latest work on Lausanne population is now online – the lipids that set us apart. Lipids reflect our chemical individuality far beyond the transcriptome, proteome and even polar metabolome! Within-subject variations, at timescale of ten years (!), are dwarfed by between-subject variations. Beyond high level of individuality, our circulatory lipid signatures are also sex-specific.…
