The Waterhouse group has been awarded a grant from UNIL’s Fondation Herbette to work with the Parc naturel régional de la Vallée du Trient to promote its alpine biodiversity. The project aims to bring visibility to the activities of the park while at the same time generating important genetic resources for some of its charismatic fauna and flora. A preliminary set of 13 species has been selected for the generation of reference quality genome assemblies, in collaboration with the European Reference Genome Atlas initiative.

Federico Riva, a Marie-Slobdowa-Curie fellow in the Guisan group, was offered an Assistant-Professor position in conservation biology at
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Dept. of Environmental Geography, starting on 1st April 2023. The position is centered on assessing the potential contribution of land use planning to the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. Congratulations to him. Federico thanks the department for hosting him and for many insightful conversations on biodiversity, the conservation potential of small habitat patches, and broad biogeographical themes; he will continue to collaborate with the Guisan group and hopefully with other groups at UNIL”

Rachel Harrison, Tecla Mohr, and Erica van de Waal published a paper in the Journal of Animal Ecology entitled "Lab cognition going wild: Implementing a new portable touchscreen system in vervet monkeys". https://doi.org/10.1111/1365-2656.13857
The study examines rates of participation in a touchscreen task, comparing wild and sanctuary-housed vervet monkeys. Captive monkeys were found to be more likely to participate in touchscreen testing than their wild counterparts, but analysis of performance on a simple associative learning task found no difference between wild and captive monkeys. Within wild monkeys, age and sex were shown to influence likelihood of participation, with adult females and juvenile males being more likely to interact with the touchscreen than adult males and juvenile females. This study documents the first successful use of touchscreen technology with wild primates, providing a starting point for testing animal cognition under natural conditions.

A synthesis about the role of supergenes in ant social evolution was published by Michel Chapuisat in Myrmecological News (yes, it’s a journal!). The article comprises a brief history of about 30 years of ant genetics, followed by an overview of the weird properties and complex evolutionary trajectories of supergenes.

While you are encouraged to place your publications into Serval, please make sure that your PI has validated the deposition first. Not all documents should be included in Serval, and they are complicated to remove.
