Mapping the spatial and temporal evolution of the coronavirus infections can reveal significant patterns, supporting the development of proper intervention policies to control the expansion of the epidemics. In this post, we show some indicators related to the Covid-19 epidemics in Switzerland.  We will try to update the data as frequently as possible, according to the availability of data from official and reliable sources.

The first map we show indicates the incidence per 100,000 inhabitants of the reported cases of COVID-19 in Switzerland. This information is currently available at the Cantonal level.

As we know, in the 81% of people coronavirus presents with mild symptoms, in 14% of people with severe symptoms, and in 5% of cases in conditions considered critical.

The fact that 80 out of 100 people have no particular problems is a very positive aspect. On the other hand, the health system must be ready to take on the 20 people who need treatment and who may require hospitalization in intensive care.

In the map below, we also reported the location of all the certified Intensive Cares Unit in Switzerland, together with the maximum available places in each of them. Note that the number of places refers to the situation before the beginning of the epidemics, and most of the hospitals will try to improve their capacity to face the potentially huge number of patients over next weeks.

Coronavirus is challenging us all. We are not in danger: we are the danger. The more we live our normal life – the more we go to our work, the more we walk in the streets, the more we do sports – the more we endanger the people around us. If we are infected, even asymptomatically, we may infect others. Therefore, mapping resident population in the country is crucial as in the municipalities with a higher population there is potentially a higher exposure to the virus.

Novel Coronavirus infections, and resulting Covid-19 disease, appear to be afflicting older populations more strongly than younger. Children and adults have done extremely well in terms of recovery, but mortality rates nearly double with each decade of age after 30, posing a disproportionate risk for those older than 60.  Hence, we also mapped the population of age 65 or more in the municipalities.
