“The Empire and I” : a conference with Izabel Barros

Izabel Barros will present her paper entitled Beyond the Ledger: The Untold Stories of Enslaved Women and Children on a 19th Century Swiss Plantation in Bahia at the third annual conference of RTG 2571 ‘Empires’.

The conference, entitled The Empire and I: Individuals in Empires and Postimperial Spaces, aims to explore the dynamic relationships between individuals and empires, highlighting how empires shaped and were shaped by the lives of their subjects.
This event will be held at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, from 28 to 30 November 2024.

Izabel’s research highlights the overlooked experiences of women and children on a Swiss-owned plantation in Bahia in the 19th century, providing a feminist intersectional perspective on imperial economic and social activities.
