From November 5–7, UNIL Hosts the International Conference “Slavery, Resistance, and Democracy: Exploring Swiss-Brazilian Connections in the 19th Century Atlantic World.”


From 5 to 7 November 2025, the University of Lausanne will host the international conference Slavery, Resistance, and Democracy: Exploring Swiss-Brazilian Connections in the 19th Century Atlantic World. Organized by Bernhard C. Schär and Izabel Barros, this event will gather historians from Brazil, Europe, and the United States to explore the links between slavery and democracy in the 19th century and their enduring legacies. The conference will be conducted mainly in English.
