“Der Geschichtegeht es um die Lebenden” – Interview with Aretuza da Cruz Silva and Gilsineth Santos

During their stay in Switzerland for the conference “Slavery, Resistance, and Democracy: Exploring Swiss-Brazilian Connections in the 19th Century Atlantic World,” historians Aretuza da Cruz Silva and Gilsineth Santos gave an interview to the local newspaper Schaffhauser AZ. Their research traces the history of the Helvécia coffee plantation in southern Bahia, founded by Swiss national Johann Martin Flach, and examines its connections to violence and the transatlantic slave trade.
