Ever wondered how to best conserve stool samples in order to be able to recover bacteria thereof after a certain storage time in the -80°C freezer? Check out our new article where we tested 16 different storage conditions for long-term preservation of stool samples across the lifespan. We show that standard glycerol preservation and simple snap-freezing performed comparably to more complex and costly protocols, with all cultured samples retaining donor-specific microbiota profiles after long-term cryopreservation.
A big shout out to the first authors Youzheng Teo and Anton Lavrinenko and our great collaborators on the Microbiota Vault pilot phase Adrian Egli, Nicholas Bokulich and Maria Gloria Dominguez Bello.
