When local authorities use social networks
This article examines the use of social networks by communes in the La Côte region. The analysis, carried out in collaboration with a research group from the University of Lausanne and the HES-SO Valais-Wallis, looked at communes with more than 1,000 inhabitants between September 2022 and March 2023. The results show that of the 52 communes studied, only 19 are active on Facebook, 10 on Instagram and 7 on Twitter.
The most active communes, such as Nyon, Morges and Gland, have set up dedicated human resources to manage their online presence. They regularly publish content and achieve significant interaction with their audiences. By contrast, other communes, such as Rolle and Prangins, make only marginal use of social networks.
Raphaël Zumofen, researcher at the HES-SO Valais-Wallis and the University of Lausanne, points out that the use of social networks by communes is still limited in Switzerland, mainly due to a lack of resources and skills. Some communes, such as Saint-Prex and Cossonay, prefer not to be present on social networks, preferring their websites or traditional means of communication such as local newspapers.
