Thermal structure and circulation patterns of Lake Geneva applying three-dimensional (3D) finite element modeling

Dr Anh-Dao Le Thi

This study concentrates on the overall hydrodynamics of the lake, with experiments and modeling of the Vidy Bay area, in order to give information on hydrodynamics and sediment movement. It involves development and improvement of a finite element model of lake hydrodynamics, coupled with field validation. It will focus on the transfer of water and sediments from the shore to deeper regions of the lake. The model includes the application of an interpolated wind field and other climatic parameters and the introduction of a pre-defined lake temperature profiles, to better take into account horizontal and vertical variations observed in the water mass, and incorporate a sedimentation module to simulate particle settling originating from either rivers or resuspension.
