PUBLICATIONS

Working with an interdisciplinary group of researchers, Robert Waterhouse and colleagues published in the journal PNAS, a detailed examination of the properties of the Sialokinin peptide found in the saliva of some mosquitoes. It increases blood vessel permeability, allowing an influx of virus-permissive cells, and providing more opportunities for the virus to replicate. Evolutionarily, Sialokinin is unique within the insect world as it exhibits a vertebrate-like tachykinin function, which can be proinflammatory, possibly in a similar manner to some spider and octopus peptides.

The Genofish consortium, including Christabel Floi Bucao, Miya (Qiaowei) Pan and Marc Robinson-Rechavi, have published the discovery of a sex determinant gene in Pangasiidae catfishes. This gene was derived from a duplication of an anti-Müllerian hormone receptor gene. The new gene is truncated, and was identified thanks to the high quality genome assembly.
