Thanks to an international collaboration, Cleo Bertelsmeier was able to participate in the analysis of almost two million border interceptions of insects transported by humans to nine different world regions. The data show remarkable similarity among regions for most insect orders and provide a window into the global on-going movement of invasive species around the planet. Read more...

An international team lead by Luca Fumagalli studied for the first time the domestication history of Cannabis sativa (hemp and marijuana), based on the analysis of dozens of new genomes from specimens of worldwide origins. The results suggest that the species was first domesticated in East Asia about 12,000 years ago, possibly for multipurpose usage, and that strong divergent selection for either fiber or chemical compounds started only about 4,000 years ago. The team also identified several candidate genes which could have been the target during artificial selection for either increased fiber production or medicinal/recreational use, involved in the architecture of the plant, flowering time, cell wall synthesis and cannabinoid production. Finally, the authors uncovered an alternate loss of function in the highly selected hemp or marijuana varieties of the genes involved in the production of the two main cannabinoids THC and CBD, respectively.
