A common assumption in human medicine, livestock production, and conservation is that fertilising eggs with cryopreserved or fresh sperm has no effect on offsping performance. David Nusbaumer, Lucas Marques da Cunha and Claus Wedekind tested this in a within-subject experimental design with brown trout and found indeed no effects on embryo growth or stress tolerance. However, at later larval stages, when paternal genes play a more important role, being fertilised by cryopreserved sperm significantly reduced growth (by about 4%). Sperm cryopreservation is hence not as benign as assumed. (Nusbaumer et al., Proc. R. Soc. B, 2019).

With his colleagues from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Prof. Waterhouse published in the journal Genome Research, results from analysing human, mouse, chicken, fly, worm, and mosquito genomes to predict novel conserved protein-coding regions. This requires building multi-species whole-genome alignments and performing downstream coding-potential analyses, currently being further developed by Romain Feron, PhD student in the Waterhouse Group.
