Infectious disease specialist Noémie Boillat Blanco, an associate professor at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine at UNIL, is developing decision-support tools based on artificial intelligence to improve diagnostics and reduce the over-prescription of antibiotics. Her work, conducted between CHUV, EPFL, and international partners, includes a portable ultrasound device combined with AI to detect respiratory infections like tuberculosis.
She advocates for a pragmatic and interdisciplinary approach, aiming to make AI accessible in resource-limited settings while being mindful of energy challenges. Boillat Blanco also calls for adaptive clinical trials and better use of healthcare resources, emphasizing that AI must remain a tool to support healthcare professionals, not a substitute.
