2 PhD Positions in Glacier Geophysics

The CRAG group has 2 PhD student openings as part of the Drone Radar for Alpine Glacier ObservatioN (DRAGON ๐Ÿ‰) project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. This project builds on our recent and exciting work on high-resolution, high-density, 3D and 4D surveying of alpine glaciers using a newly developed drone-based ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system. PhD 1 will focus on characterizing and monitoring steep, inaccessible glaciers to enhance our understanding of the physical processes driving ice avalanches. PhD 2 will concentrate on mapping and monitoring englacial and subglacial hydrological networks, investigating seasonal and interannual changes to advance glacier hydrology research. Successful applicants will have a strong quantitative and computer programming background, and hold a Masterโ€™s degree in geophysics, physics, engineering, or a related quantitative discipline. A passion for conducting multi-day fieldwork in remote and challenging alpine environments is also essential.
