Computational Biology Group

The Computational Biology Group (CBG), led by Prof. Sven Bergmann, is part of the Department of Computational Biology at the University of Lausanne and affiliated with the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics.

We develop and apply computational methods, ranging from statistical approaches to machine learning, to understand how genetic variation shapes complex biological phenotypes and human disease. Our research combines genomics, medical imaging and large-scale population data, with the aim of uncovering biological mechanisms and improving our understanding and prediction of human disease.

A major current focus is image-based phenotyping. We use medical images — particularly retinal images, but also images of other organs and vascular structures — to derive quantitative phenotypes using both interpretable image features and deep-learning models.

Our current research builds on longstanding interests in statistical genetics, systems biology and computational genomics, ranging from the analysis and integration of high-dimensional molecular data to modelling biological systems.

Close collaborations with geneticists, clinicians, imaging specialists and other computational scientists are an integral part of our research.
