Geoview: Spatial statistics about education in Ecuador

Geoview is the result of a project aiming at implementing technical methods for the visualization of geographical data, to communicate about a socio-spatial problem through an interactive geographical visualization page. It was made by Daniela Marino Castro and Fatima Ezzahra Barik for the course Géo-visualisation dynamique et traitement de données given by Christian Kaiser.

Geoview is a web portal for monitoring education in Ecuador. It’s divided in three sections:

  • The main page that presents generalities about Ecuadorian education.
  • A second section called statistics incorporates a geographic and statistical framework about the distribution of schools in each province, to evaluate the number of students per teacher.
  • The third section is called view, that presents thematic cartography of education and socio-economic issues, with the option to upload Web Map Service layers, and obtain official statistics from the Ecuadorian statistics service SIISE.

The objective is to account for an inequality in the number of students that should be handled by one teacher, considering that teachers are capable of manage around 19 students at most, according to recent studies of University of Texas .

The possibility of having a geographical tool, gives the opportunity to analyse this inequality by displaying it and putting it in relation with some institutional variables, such as the typology of financial sources.

The aim of the third section view is to give extra information about Ecuadorian reality and give the opportunity to people to visualize other layers for a multicriteria analysis. This page gives the users the possibility do analyses using the official page of statistical indicators of Ecuador SIISE data, they can also compare with external Web Map Service  layer of other services.
