Wissam Halawi is a professor specializing in the history of Islam at the Institute of history and anthropology of religions at the University of Lausanne. His research focuses on medieval Islam, minorities in Islam, the history of muslim law (fiqh) and justice, druze studies, and the dynamics of authority and religious institutions.
He is the author of Les Druzes aux marges de l’Islam. Ésotérisme et normativité en milieu rural XIVe-XVIe siècle (2021). His recent publications include « Zinā and Gender (In)Equality in Ismāʿīlī Druze Law » (2022), « Marriage and Kinship among the Amirs of the Banū al-Ḥusayn: The Rise of the Buḥturid Qadis in Rural Mamluk Syria (Eighth/Fourteenth Century) » (2022).
