HIGHLIGHTS

Congratulations to Profs. Tanja Schwander, John Pannell, Antoine Guisan and Tadeusz Kawecki for recently obtaining substantial competitive research funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation. Tanja Schwander's project studies the impact of genomic conflicts of genome and phenotype evolution. John Pannell's project is about the evaluation and resolution of sexual conflict in flowering plants. Antoine Guisan's project is about comparative biogeography and spatial modelling of soil microbial communities in the Swiss Alps. Tadeusz Kawecki's project is about experimental test of pathogen resistance as a context-dependent indirect benefit of female choice.
Congratulations to Prof. Laurent Keller who was elected as Professors representative at the Conseil de l'Université.

PUBLICATIONS

Prof. Erica van de Waal, two master students and a postdoc of the Inkawu Vervet Project, published a review article in Cortex. This paper aims to show how findings from wild vervet monkeys have contributed (and continue to contribute) to our understanding of the evolution of human cognitive capacities and suggest future avenues of research with this species.

The Waterhouse Group, as part of the international i5k consortium, published in Genome Biology their study of the genome of the milkweed bug, Oncopeltus fasciatus. The extensive comparative analysis of insect genomes focused on Hemiptera, or the true bugs, with their varied diets including sap-sucking aphids, blood-sucking bed bugs, and the seed feeding milkweed bug.
