HIGHLIGHTS

Before starting working in the laboratories, UNISEP has prepared new courses that should be followed from now.

Module 1, an e-learning course that should take 20min.
https://courses.unil.ch/unisep/cours/2228 (en français)
https://courses.unil.ch/unisep/cours/2236 (in English)

Module 2, a 2-hour theoretical course on safety measures that will be given in French or English by UNISEP at Geopolis.
Register on https://courses.unil.ch/unisep.

For example: There are still some places for this month.

Module 3, an introduction to the labs at the DEE given by
Dessi Savova or Anne-Lyse Roulin.

People will receive a certificate of attendance for each step. Only then, people can start working in the labs, thus think ahead.
As part of SMBE 2024, we are presenting the symposium "Unlocking the hidden dimensions of genomic diversity within species". SNPs and CNVs, only represent two facets of the vast genomic landscape. Genomes exhibit remarkable variability in numerous alternative dimensions. Among others, epigenetics, 3D chromatin conformation and gene expression variation are acknowledged to be heritable and have an impact on phenotype. With this symposium, we aim to bring together researchers interested in addressing the conundrum of genomic diversity from alternative perspectives.

You are very welcome to send us your abstracts!
DEE collaborators Olivier Broennimann and Antoine Guisan, also affiliated to the Faculty of geosciences and the environment, contributed to a study of genetic monitoring in Europe, published earlier this month in Nature Ecology & Evolution. They made an essential contribution to the study, which they co-led, in developing a new spatial screening tool based on the identification, in geographic space, of species’ limits of environmental tolerance at their niche margins. By cumulating this approach across many species in a large survey of genetic monitoring sites in Europe, they could identify gaps where major species distribution changes cold occur under climate change and where genetic monitoring would be most important.
Title: "Monitoring species genetic diversity in Europe varies greatly and overlooks potential climate change impacts", with Olivier Broennimann as co-first author, and Antoine Guisan as last author from UNIL, released last 15 January in Nature Ecology and Evolution.

You thought you knew everything about mitochondrial DNA?

In this paper, Marcelo Serano, when doing his master BEC first step project in Jerôme Goudet's group under the supervision of Tristan Cumer, shows that the control region of mitochondrial genome of the Barn owl (Tyto alba) arbours tandem repeats, the number of which varies between individuals regardless of their population of origin.

Inbreeding depression is expected to increase with environmental, social, or physiological stress. Sex-specific life histories are therefore likely to create sex-specific effects of inbreeding. We tested this hypothesis in brown trout around a stage when the sexes invest differently in gonad formation. We used gametes of wild-caught adults to produce 60 experimental families that we then released into the wild and recaptured 6 months later, i.e. around a time when gonads are formed. Females reached indeed lower body sizes with increasing inbreeding coefficient, while no such link could be found in males. (Bylemans & Marques da Cunha et al.: Sex-specific effects of inbreeding in juvenile brown trout. Mol. Ecol. 2024).
