The Spring season of DEE External Seminars is lauched. On February 20th, we will have our first External Speaker to be invited and presented by one of our postdocs. Dr Jeanne Tonnabel will host Professor Frank Schurr from the University of Hohenheim. He will speak about large-scale eco-evolutionary dynamics from first principles of demography. Learn more about seminars to come on DEE Seminar agenda.

The Behavior, Economics, and Evolution (BEE) Lecture Series, co-organized by HEC and FBM, will soon start again. The Lecture Series focuses on human and animal behavior at the crossroads of biology, economics, and psychology. The talks are held on Thursday afternoon, 15h15-16h00, in room Geopolis 1628, beginning 28th of February and the program is here.

Congratulations to Professor Cleo Bertelsmeier who has now started her mandate of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) at the DEE. Professor Bertelsmeier will teach General Ecology and her research project is centred around two main themes: 1. Globalization of trade and the worldwide spread of invasive species and 2. Establishment of invasive species under novel environmental conditions.

Congratulations to Professor Alexandre Roulin for the cover of the UNISCOPE about his contribution to the dialogue between populations through Owl conservation projects.

Congratulations to Professor Philippe Christe and his team for their work in Mongolia on the snow leopard. The magazine Allez Savoir dedicates an article to this study. (Photo, © Batt'Art / Shutterstock).

Congratulations to Pauline Ducouret who defended her public thesis on Monday, February 4 2019. Her thesis was entilted : La résolution des conflits par la négociation vocale et la coopération stratégiques entre les poussins de chouettes effraies (Tyto alba). We thank Pauline for her collaboration during her PhD studies and we wish her the best for the future.

After almost three years at the University of Lausanne, Jake Alexander is moving to the University of Zurich to take over an Assistant Professor position. We will see Jake again during the spring 2019 since he will continue to teach Biological invasions to our students. We wish him the best in Zurich.

Congratulations to several present and past members of the DEE (Ivan Mateus, Frédéric Masclaux, Romain Savary, Edward Rojas, Cindy Dupuis and Consolée Aletti) for their work showing large-scale transcriptional reprogramming in cassava in response to the mycorrhizal symbiosis is highly plant genotype dependent. Their work is published in ISME Journal.

The Waterhouse Group in collaboration with the Kapheim Group from Utah State University published their comparative genomics and population genetics analyses of a solitary alkali bee in the journal G3: Genes | Genomes | Genetics. Nomia melanderia is an efficient native pollinator of alfalfa seed and a key comparator species for studying the evolution of sociality.

Rapid evolution in response to common pollutants such as ethynylestradiol, the estrogen that is used in oral contraceptives, requires additive genetic variance for the susceptibility to the stressor. Such genetic variance could repeatedly be found in lake-dwelling salmonid fish, but Dr. Lucas Marques da Cunha (Wedekind Group) and his colleagues could not find it in seven populations of river-dwelling brown trout that have been exposed to higher concentrations and that still suffer from toxic effects. Their findings support the hypothesis that continuous selection over the last decades has depleted genetic variance for tolerance to this synthetic stressor. Published in Evolutionary Applications (Jan 2019).

A study led by Dr Andrea Romano (Roulin Group) has shown convergent evolution of melanin-based plumage colouration according to climatic factors, such as temperature and rainfall, during three simultaneous adaptive radiations of the barn owl species complex occurring in different continents. It was published in Global Ecology and Biogeography.

At the end of 2018, the DEE acquired a Laser cutter (Trotec Speedy 360). It allows users to precisely cut and engrave various materials (e.g. wood, MDF, acrylic) in a time- and cost-efficient manner for various research applications. But this system cannot be used without a few clear instructions and safety good practices. At the moment, one person is able to learn you how to handle it: Alexandre Tuleu (from the Keller group). In order to learn how to use, please get in touch with Alexandre alexandre.tuleu@unil.ch. After following a quick training (ca. 30-60 min), you will be given access to the laser-cutting room. Training sessions will only take place in small groups every month, so please anticipate if you need to get the training to access the Laser cutting system. Thank you for your collaboration.
