Congratulations to Prof. Cleo Bertelsmeier who received a FBM award for her outstanding commitment to the development of communication strategies for the general public in the field of life sciences. See the UNIL press release.
Congratulations to Prof. John Pannell who was appointed by the Swiss National Science Foundation as member of it's National Council for Research, Division IIII, Biology and Medicine. See the UNIL Press release.
| Congratulations to Prof. Antoine Guisanwho obtained a grant from the SNF in the "Lead Agencies" program to develop a collaboration project with Dr Alain Vanderpoorten from the University of Liege in Belgium. The project is entitled: |
| "Hiding for surviving? Last-glacial maximum phylogeography to inform spatially-explicit predictions on the ability of Alpine biota to migrate as a response to climate change in Swiss Alps (GEN4MIG)". |
Congratulations to our colleague, Dr Erik Frank (Postdoctoral fellow in the Keller group) who has written an autobiography in which he looks back on his life experience and his work. Entitled "Combattre, sauver, soigner - Une histoire de fourmis", the book was published on Sept. 24th 2020 by CNRS editions. See the UNIL Press release.

PUBLICATIONS
Olivia Bates, PhD Student, and Prof. Cleo Bertelsmeier published an article in Nature Communications. Wether or not species - when introduced to a new location - eventually become invasive has been linked to the species’ capacity to expand its niche. However, here the authors show that the extent of niche shifts is smaller in non-invasive than invasive ant species, questioning this established hypothesis.

With colleagues from the USDA Forest Service and from the University of Texas, Prof. Cleo Bertelemeier published an article in NeoBiota. This article shows that early stages of invasions, arrival and establishment, are considered distinct from the later stage of spread, but the processes of population growth and dispersal underlie all invasion phases. Here, we argue that the spread of invading species, to a first approximation, exhibits scale invariant spatial-dynamic patterns that transcend multiple spatial scales.

A changing planet threatens many species including bumblebees that are globally important pollinators in natural ecosystems and in agricultural food production. To uncover their genetic diversity, an international team co-led by Prof. Robert Waterhouse sequenced the genomes of 17 bumblebee species to examine variation potentially underlying their diverse ecological and behavioural traits. By greatly extending species sampling, the large-scale comparative study, published in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution, now provides the first genus-wide quantification of genetic and genomic diversity potentially linked to key eco-ethological traits in bumblebees.
