The synthetic hormone ethynylestradiol (EE2) used in the contraceptive pill is among the most common polluants of freshwater environments. In their MSc theses, Oliver Selmoni (MSc MLS) and Diane Maitre (MSc BEC) tested whether EE2 affects gene expression and sex differentiation in a natural population of grayling (Thymallus thymallus) that suffers from a distorted sex-ratio. They found that an ecologically relevant concentration of EE2 strongly interferes with sex-specific gene expression but does not seem to induce sex reversal. The work was jointly supervised by Prof. Marc Robinson-Rechavi and Prof. Claus Wedekind and will be published in BMC Genomics.
