HIGHLIGHTS

Congratulations to the Waterhouse group, who has been awarded an SNSF SPARK grant entitled "Next-generation data mining of organismal and ecological trait data across Arthropoda". The project aims to bring the fields of entomology and informatics together to develop modern resources that will greatly benefit researchers studying arthropod biodiversity and evolution. You can find a brief summary of the project here.

From August to October 2020, biologists from UNIL, Roulin's group, propose, on four occasions, animations about the Barn Owl in the gardens of the Château de Vullierens. These special days complement the small exhibition that is permanently present on the site.

PUBLICATIONS

Former members of the group of Nicolas Perrin published an article in Evolution letters showing that Toads hybridize despite having different sex chromosomes. This publication was also advertised by UNIL press release.

Crapauds
With colleagues from the Utah State University, the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, and others, Prof. Robert Waterhouse published in the journal PNAS, results from investigating the evolutionary origins of eusociality using the facultatively eusocial bee, Megalopta genalis. Genes regulating social flexibility also regulate development: mechanisms underlying social plasticity are shared with ancient developmental processes, such as sex differentiation and metamorphosis. They also studied microRNAs in bee genomes and their expression in the brains of six species with variable social organisation. Published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, the results suggest that novel miRNAs may coevolve with novel genes, and thus contribute to lineage-specific patterns of evolution.

Sans titre
With a colleague of the Inkawu Vervet Project, Prof. Erica van de Waal published in Primates an article explaining reactions to infant death by wild vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: prolonged carrying, non-mother carrying, and partial maternal cannibalism.

DEE LIFE

We thank you and count on you all to continue the efforts with booking the google docs for the labs and office occupancy, mask wearing, desinfection of material and hands, observance of social distancing, due to the (still) pandemic situation. As you have probably all heard, precautions are more important than ever to avoid a second wave. See the guidelines of the FBM and take care.
