Congratulations to Amaranta Fontcuberta who received a grant from CIRM (Centre Interdisciplinaire de Recherche sur la Montagne) to organize an interdisciplinary project about the mountain valley where she studies ants for her PhD. The project called "La Rencontre Interdisciplinaire de métiers de Derborence" will rassemble geologists, engineers, sheperds and biologists in a conference on June 26th in Conthey (Valais). This will be followed by a series of thematic walks about each profession in the valley of Derborence during Saturday afternoons of July and August.

Congratulations to Jérémy Gremion who received on June 6th a Faculty Prize for the excellence of his master work under the supervision of Prof. Philippe Christe. This work is the result of a collaboration with the Division of Conservation Biology of the University of Bern (Prof. Raphaël Arlettaz and Dr Alain Jaccot). The master thesis was entitled "Habitat preference of wintering Ortolan Buntings (Emberiza Hortulana) in Ethiopian agroecosystems".

Thomas Kay (PhD Student), Prof. Laurent Lehmann and Prof. Laurent Keller, published an article in Current Biology (≠29, R425-R473) about "Kin Selection and altruism" showing paradigmatic examples of altruistic phenotypes explained by kin selection.

DEE members Prof. Marc Robinson-Rechavi and Prof. Robert Waterhouse and former DEE members Mathieu Seppey, Camille Pitteloud, Dr Julien Roux and Prof. Nadir Alvarez published an article in Genome Biology showing how the dynamic evolution of detoxification genes underlies the diversity of plant-feeding beetles. The study explored the possible genomic consequences of plant–beetle interactions by contrasting gene repertoires of nine species each from the mostly plant-eating Polyphaga with those of the mainly predatory Adephaga.

Sexually attractive or competitive males are hypothesized to pass on genes for pathogen resistance, providing genetic incentive for mating with them, but evidence for this is mixed. A new paper coming out of Patrick Joye’s PhD work shows that Drosophila males that are more sexually successful sire indeed sons with higher resistance to a bacterial pathogen – but only if sexual success is assessed after the males themselves have been exposed to the pathogen. In contrast, males that win female attention in the absence of the pathogen actually produce less resistant sons. Thus, rather than unconditionally signaling immunocompetence, traits involved in sexual selection may only reveal resistance to the pathogens to which the males were exposed when developing their sexual traits. In the absence of the pathogen resistance even carries a cost reducing male sexual success. In conclusion, whether sexual selection promotes pathogen resistance depends on the epidemiological context in which it operates. Proc. R. Soc. B
