Congratulations to Dr Germain Montazeaud (Keller group) who was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship for his project SOCLE (SOCial seLEction in cultivated plants). The main goal of this project is to use the framework of social evolution theory to better understand plant-plant interactions in crops. Such understanding could notably open new opportunities to develop innovative agronomic solutions based on crop cooperation. The project will be conducted in collaboration with Agroscope.

See the Press relase in Swissinfo.ch where Professor Laurent Keller explains how the division of labour in ant colonies has little to do with age but is apparently determined by random factors. This press release follows the publication of an article by the Keller group (see below) in Current Biology.

Former PhD Students (Cristian Rincon, Lucas Villard) and bioinformatician (Frédéric Masclaux) of the Sanders Group published an article in Mycorrhiza.
|
|
The article aims to gain a better understanding of processes involved in shaping tropical AMF community composition and AMF establishment are much needed and could allow for the development of sustainable, productive tropical agroecosystems.

In a study published on March 16, 2021 in Current Biology, current and former members of the Keller group (Dr Thomas Richardson, Tomas Kay, Dr Raphaël Braunschweig, Dr Opaline Journeau, Matthias Ruëgg and Sean McGregor), discovered that, in ants, the chances of climbing the professional ladder within the colony are not determined by age, but by a random process. This allows the whole colony to remain robust throughout the year. This article was the subject of a UNIL press review.

Prof. Erica van de Waal published a review article in iScience, entitled "Organized to learn: the influence of social structure on social learning opportunities in a group", resulting from a literature review of master student from Utrecht University that she supervised. This review explores how features of social structure affect social learning opportunities in primates, either through their relationship with social tolerance or through the number of social learning models. Features that are investigated in this review and that we hypothesize affect social learning opportunities are parental investment, dominance hierarchy, nepotism, social bonds, dispersal, group size, fission-fusion dynamics, and sex ratio. For most of these features we find evidence, but support varies. Of all primate species, only humans show all the requirements of an optimal social structure to promote social learning.
