Info DEE # 1 January 2019

HAPPY NEW YEAR !

Welcome to the first issue of the new DEE newsletter. As 2019 begins, there are a few changes coming to the DEE. The DEE is continually growing so we decided to have a new forum for circulating news within our large and diverse department. This will be a monthly news sheet that you will receive in your mail. As the new director of the DEE, I wish everyone a very happy new year and that all of you will be successful in your research and teaching or other activities within the DEE.

EXTERNAL SEMINARS

Last October, the DEE has decided to allocate two slots per semester for speakers invited by the PhD students and postdocs of the department. This is a great opportunity to invite and meet someone whose work you’re interested in, and that you think will interest your colleagues. This coming semester, one of these two slots (May 29th), is still free and reserved for such a speaker. Please contact your representatives with ideas of potential speakers. More generally, seminars held at the DEE/Biophore (Internal or external seminars) can be checked by consulting the DEE Seminar agenda.

PUBLICATIONS

A study led by Dr Darren Parker of the Prof. Schwander and Prof. Robinson-Rechavi labs has shown convergent gene expression change during five independent transitions to asexuality in stick insects, driven by selection. It was published in Molecular Biology and Evolution

Prof. Erica van de Waal co-edited (with two colleagues from the UK and USA) a special issue of the Journal of Comparative Psychology 'Celebrating the Continued Importance of “Machiavellian Intelligence" 30 Years On', came out in November.

The Waterhouse Group published a Feature Review in Trends in Parasitology, entitled Of Genes and Genomes: Mosquito Evolution and Diversity, which explores mosquito omics resources and recent advances in their applications, and was selected for the cover of the journal’s January edition.

The Fumagalli group published on 16th January 2019 "Two decades of non-invasive genetic monitoring of the grey wolves recolonizing the Alps support very limited dog introgression", in Scientific Report. This study shows that only 2 wolves out of 115 genetically identified in Switzerland during 20 years display significant signs of admixture stemming from past interbreeding with dogs. The genetic integrity of the Alpine population has thus remained intact throughout the entire recolonization process. This article has been subject to a media report by UNIL and extensive media coverage.

Roshan Vijendravarma, a former member of the DEE, has just published a paper in Plos Biology with results from a project he carried out independently during his last two years of postdoc in the Kawecki group. While Drosophila larvae eagerly attack and cannibalize one another, they do not cannibalize the highly nutritious and apparently defenseless eggs. Roshan has found that the egg surface contains a maternally provisioned carbohydrate known so far to act as a sex pheromone, which masks any appetizing odor from potential cannibals. This and several other carbohydrates deposited by the mother also waterproof the egg surface; without it eggs begin to leak. Eggs of mothers unable to deposit the pheromone because of a mutation are eagerly cannibalized. Thus, fly mother protect their eggs through chemical camouflage.

In October 2018 Prof. Marc Robinson-Rechavi circulated a poll about open access and publishing. Many of you took time to reply, but Marc hasn’t found time for a detailed analysis. So here are already the collated results as presented by Google. If anyone wants to do more detailed analyses and share them, please contact Marc directly.

For apero organizers, please note that the UNIL Security Departement had to change its policy. The standard hour to close an apero session is now 6:00 pm (Building closing time). In case of special events and circumstances (in particular apero to celebrate a thesis defense), we can obtain an extended deadline. Thank you for your comprehension. Moreover remember that all apero have to be announced to the Security and Building management departments by writing an email in advance (ideally 10 days before) to gestiondessalles@unil.ch.
