Theory and Explanation in Geography: An Author-Meets-Readers Session

November 29, 2024 – University of Lausanne

Theory and Explanation in Geography is one of the few provocative monographs in recent decades that engages deeply with epistemological debates on theory and method in Geography. This in-person event with the author invites readers and interested participants to examine critically the book’s main tenets and prospects for reflexive theory development as the key to the future of the discipline. The session provides an opportunity for the author to respond to comments and for the audience to engage in further discussions.

Territory and Democratic Politics: An Author-Meets-Readers Session

October 24, 2024 – University of Lausanne

In this seminar, organised together with the Mondes urbains research collective, Oscar Mazzoleni talks about his latest book Territory and Democratic Politics (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024). In the book, he introduces the concept of territory into the study of democratic politics, which is often analysed through what are known as ‘unterritorial approaches’ in political science and sociology. Drawing on the writings of both Anglophone and Francophone geographers, Mazzoleni proposes a territory-oriented approach that considers the relationships between territory, space, political institution, strategy, appropriation, place, borders, and networks. He demonstrates the relevance of this approach through territorial analyses of critical issues such as citizenship, urbanisation, populism, and the bordering experience of the COVID-19 pandemic.
