{"id":863,"date":"2022-10-24T17:33:55","date_gmt":"2022-10-24T15:33:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/vcl\/?p=863"},"modified":"2022-10-24T17:33:55","modified_gmt":"2022-10-24T15:33:55","slug":"congratulations-satu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/vcl\/congratulations-satu\/","title":{"rendered":"Congratulations Satu !"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On 7th October 2022, Dr. Satu Iho successfully defended her thesis titled: <strong>INTEGRATING EXPLORATION AND EXPLOITATION FOR DIGITAL INNOVATION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Thesis summary: Incumbent organisations face a challenge to simultaneously <em>explore <\/em>external technologies and knowledge to develop new revenue sources and <em>exploit <\/em>their existing assets and capabilities to secure existing revenue streams. Exploration and developing digital innovations call for new skills and flexible processes that allow for experimentation, iteration, and even failure, which can be stand in stark contrast to the accumulated skills and processes that have been refined for exploitation over the years. As a remedy, some organisations are choosing to move digital innovation activities into separate organisational units and toward the peripheries of the organisation. This can however hamper access to the existing knowledge base and capabilities in the rest of the organisation. To mitigate this, previous research has highlighted integration: a collaboration process to combine newly explored knowledge with existing knowledge and assets to develop digital innovation outputs. As yet, few research projects have focused specifically on understanding how distinct integration mechanisms can be used to join exploration and exploitation efforts to maximise the value of digital innovation outputs. Anchored in ambidexterity and digital innovation literature and based on qualitative data, we argue that incumbent organisations need to put in place formal integration mechanisms rather than relying on spontaneous knowledge exchange between explorative and exploitative activities. In terms of organisational units dedicated to digital innovation, we put forth the notion that solely setting up such a unit is unlikely to be sufficient as a performance boosting action but that the integration of such units must be carefully considered and managed at multiple levels, from senior management to individual employees\u2019 behaviours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>R\u00e9sum\u00e9 de la th\u00e8se:  Les organisations \u00e9tablies sont confront\u00e9es au d\u00e9fi d&rsquo;explorer simultan\u00e9ment les technologies et les connaissances externes pour d\u00e9velopper de nouvelles sources de revenus, et d&rsquo;exploiter leurs actifs et capacit\u00e9s actuels pour garantir les flux de revenus existants. L&rsquo;exploration et le d\u00e9veloppement d&rsquo;innovations num\u00e9riques exigent de nouvelles comp\u00e9tences et des processus flexibles qui permettent l&rsquo;exp\u00e9rimentation, l&rsquo;it\u00e9ration, voire l&rsquo;\u00e9chec, ce qui peut contraster fortement avec les comp\u00e9tences et les processus qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 affin\u00e9s pour l&rsquo;exploitation au fil des ans. Pour y rem\u00e9dier, certaines organisations choisissent de d\u00e9placer les activit\u00e9s d&rsquo;innovation num\u00e9rique dans des unit\u00e9s organisationnelles d\u00e9di\u00e9es et vers la p\u00e9riph\u00e9rie de l&rsquo;organisation. Cela peut toutefois entraver l&rsquo;acc\u00e8s \u00e0 la base de connaissances et aux capacit\u00e9s existantes dans le reste de l&rsquo;organisation. Pour att\u00e9nuer ce probl\u00e8me, des recherches ant\u00e9rieures ont mis l&rsquo;accent sur l&rsquo;int\u00e9gration : un processus de collaboration visant \u00e0 combiner les connaissances nouvellement explor\u00e9es avec les connaissances et les actifs existants pour stimuler l&rsquo;innovation num\u00e9rique. Jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, peu de projets de recherche se sont attach\u00e9s \u00e0 comprendre comment des m\u00e9canismes d&rsquo;int\u00e9gration distincts peuvent \u00eatre utilis\u00e9s pour joindre les efforts d&rsquo;exploration et d&rsquo;exploitation afin de maximiser la valeur des r\u00e9sultats de l&rsquo;innovation num\u00e9rique. Ancr\u00e9s dans la litt\u00e9rature sur l&rsquo;ambidextrie et l&rsquo;innovation num\u00e9rique, et bas\u00e9s sur des donn\u00e9es qualitatives, nous soutenons que les organisations \u00e9tablies doivent mettre en place des m\u00e9canismes d&rsquo;int\u00e9gration formels plut\u00f4t que de compter sur l&rsquo;\u00e9change spontan\u00e9 de connaissances entre les activit\u00e9s d&rsquo;exploration et d&rsquo;exploitation.
