{"id":212,"date":"2019-10-16T16:16:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-16T14:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/tourismeetdeveloppement\/?p=212"},"modified":"2019-10-16T16:16:00","modified_gmt":"2019-10-16T14:16:00","slug":"sika-k%c9%94k%c9%94%c9%94-a-treasure-of-ghana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/tourismeetdeveloppement\/2019\/10\/sika-k%c9%94k%c9%94%c9%94-a-treasure-of-ghana\/","title":{"rendered":"Sika k?k?? : a treasure of Ghana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From the 17th to the 20th century, a region situated in the sub-region of West Africa along the Gulf of Guinea was known as the \u201cGold Coast\u201d&#8230;-<em>Pauline Lalondrelle et Lara Maye<\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00\">Europe struck Gold!<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This place was an intense source of colonial rivalry between the Portuguese, English, Danes, and French. They all fought for its ivory, its slaves but mainly for its gold, which gave this region its name. \u201cThe Gold Coast\u201d disappeared on the 6th March of 1957 to become the Republic of Ghana.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00\">Ghana going for gold\u2026<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In 2018, Ghana was the biggest producer of gold in the world. This gold is highly in demand from emerging market central banks like China, India, Russia and Turkey, seeking to increase their holdings of gold to diversify their asset bases. It is also sold to specialised markets for industrial or artistic uses.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> Ghana\u2019s economic growth rate for 2019 is estimated at 8.8%, the fastest growing in the world due to cocoa, petrol and, of course, gold.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> Those earnings are especially used to develop tourism and culture. Photo: \u00a9 jbdodane<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #ffcc00\">Becoming a Gold Digger\u2026<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If gold mining has contributed to Ghana&rsquo;s socio-economic development, its impacts have been less than brilliant on the population and the environment. The Ghanaian government leases land to multinational mining companies, land which is taken from the local populations who do not receive any compensation.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[5]<\/a> Gold refining leads to contamination of the soil, agriculture is no longer possible in the areas affected.
