Self-interested factors such as the\u00a0fear of leaving society, and the\u00a0awareness of various benefits of living with others may\u00a0play their roles. Yet there are also other factors, such as forms of natural\u00a0sociability,\u00a0benevolence and sympathy, solidarity with other members of society, and tolerance with\u00a0respect to different opinions and\u00a0values. Sometimes religion is considered helpful for\u00a0keeping societies together, sometimes it is presented as the very cause of\u00a0division.<br class=\"\" \/><br class=\"\" \/>The nature, potential and limits of tolerance, sociability, solidarity and the role of religion\u00a0were discussed by many philosophers\u00a0in the Scottish tradition, and in particular in the\u00a0Scottish Enlightenment. We invite paper proposals that explore the roles of these\u00a0notions\u00a0in Scottish philosophy in the first conference of the new Institute for the Study of Scottish\u00a0Philosophy (ISSP), to be held in\u00a0Lausanne (Switzerland) on 8-10 March 2019.<br class=\"\" \/><br class=\"\" \/>Proposals of not more than 400 words should be sent by email attachment to\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"mailto:issp@usiouxfalls.edu\">issp@usiouxfalls.edu<\/a>\u00a0by November 1, 2018.\u00a0Decisions will be notified by November 30,\u00a02018.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the links to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usiouxfalls.edu\/academics\/issp\">ISSP website<\/a>, and to the former <a href=\"https:\/\/cssp.ptsem.edu\">CSSP website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><b class=\"\">Funding for Graduate Students<\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">We are also pleased to announce the\u00a0<i class=\"\">Gordon Graham Prize in Scottish Philosophy<\/i>. The winner of this prize will receive financial support including registration, travel, and lodging to\u00a0attend the 2019 ISSP conference in Lausanne Switzerland.\u00a0The winner\u2019s paper will also be published in the\u00a0<i class=\"\">Journal of\u00a0Scottish Philosophy<\/i>. The runner-up will be invited to the conference\u00a0and published in the\u00a0<i class=\"\">Journal of Scottish Philosophy<\/i>.
