It is funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snsf.ch\">Swiss National Science Foundation<\/a> from August 2016 &#8211; April 2021 and hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unil.ch\/philo\/home.html\">Philosophy Department<\/a> at the\u00a0University of Lausanne.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">It is in <strong>philosophy<\/strong> as the main discipline, and it includes collaboration with other disciplines, such as history, theology, religious studies, literary studies, and law.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">There are three subprojects in the <strong>history of philosophy<\/strong>,\u00a0analysing central arguments for and against tolerance from rarely studied early modern Reformed sources at the intersection of philosophy and theology. They concern:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0the Genevan theologian and philosopher <strong>Jean-Alphonse Turrettini<\/strong> (1671-1737);<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">debates on tolerance in <strong>seventeenth-century Scottish philosophy<\/strong>, with a particular focus on the philosopher James Dundas (c.1620-1679);<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\">debates on tolerance in <strong>eighteenth-century Scotland <\/strong>and<strong> England<\/strong>, including the reception of Turrettini&#8217;s writings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One\u00a0<strong>systematic<\/strong>\u00a0subproject explores the connections between\u00a0the well established philosophical concepts of <strong>tolerance <\/strong>and<strong> intolerance<\/strong> on the one hand, and the more recent notion of <strong>discrimination<\/strong>, which is primarily rooted in legal studies, on the other hand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The historical and the systematic projects\u00a0are interconnected: clear concepts are crucial for analysing and evaluating arguments in the history of philosophy, and an awareness of historical dimensions and cultural contexts is required for an appropriate discussion of systematic contemporary questions about tolerance, intolerance and discrimination.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This research project investigates debates on tolerance, intolerance and discrimination regarding religion.
