He studied mathematics, computer science, artificial intelligence and computational biology. He did his master thesis within the Blue Brain Project at EPFL on neuron electrophysiological classification in 2007. Then he left the research and moved to the industry. He worked for a small company on the development and installation of smart camera able to detect smoke and fire. After 2 years he decided to move back to its first interest in computational biology and did a one-year project at Merck Serono within the biomarker discovery department. He developed a tool for automatic gene-signatures detection on gene expression microarray. In 2011, he had the opportunity to go to US and worked 6 months as an engineer in the Blood Brain Barrier Group at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Back in Switzerland in January 2012, he started a PhD in the Statistical Genetics Group under the supervision of Zoltan Kutalik and Alexandre Reymond. He is currently working on Copy Number Variant (CNV) detection, association and interpretation.

Aurélien Macé obtained in 2007 a double master degree from Ecole Centrale Nantes in France and KTH in Sweden.
