We were very pleased and honoured to host the 21st LARAM School <\/a>(LAndslide Risk Assessment and Mitigation)<\/strong> at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, from 7 to 18 September 2026. The two-week international summer school brought together 23 selected PhD students and early-career researchers from around the world, offering an intensive programme of lectures, practical workshops, student presentations, and field activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scientific programme covered a broad range of topics, from landslide mechanisms and physical processes to risk assessment, monitoring, mitigation, and civil protection. The school welcomed internationally renowned lecturers<\/a>, including Prof. Leonardo Cascini on landslide susceptibility and risk frameworks, Prof. Claudio Scavia on rock failure initiation, Prof. Giovanni Crosta on rockfalls and rock avalanches, and Prof. Shiva P. Pudasaini on flow-like landslide propagation and tsunamis. Other sessions addressed soil behaviour, failure diagnosis, and landslide triggering, with contributions from Prof. Sebastiano Ferrari, Prof. Federica Cotecchia, Prof. Sabatino Cuomo, and Prof. \u017deljko Arbanas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme also explored advanced approaches to risk assessment and management, including dynamic multi-hazard risk assessment with Prof. Cees van Westen, mitigation strategies and Nature-based Solutions with Dr. Farrokh Nadim, early warning systems and the HuT project with Prof. Michele Calvello, remote sensing and civil protection with Dr. Veronica Tofani, and decision-making and risk communication with Dr. Anna Scolobig. Contributions from the Geotechnical Engineering Office of Hong Kong and Dr. Mike Winter further connected scientific research with practical challenges in geotechnical engineering and landslide\u2013infrastructure interactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside the lectures, participants took part in hands-on tutorials on quantitative landslide assessment, a workshop dedicated to Swiss case studies, and a full-day field excursion to the La Saxe landslides in the Italian Alps, led by L. Dorren, J. Travelletti, A. Pedrazzini, and D. Bertolo. Daily student presentation sessions gave participants the opportunity to present their own research, exchange ideas, and receive feedback from internationally recognised experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond its scientific content, the school fostered a particularly friendly and stimulating atmosphere, encouraging discussions and interactions between lecturers and young researchers. It was a great success and a valuable opportunity to strengthen international collaborations and the LARAM community, which now brings together more than 1,000 alumni from over 200 universities worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
