Mud masses collapsed from an unstable hill and covered an area of about 2.5 km<sup>2 <\/sup>, destroying 49 houses and other structures (<a title=\"14 dead; 176 reports of people missing in mile-wide mudslide\" href=\"https:\/\/seattletimes.com\/html\/localnews\/2023215066_mudslidemondayxml.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SeattleTimes<\/a>).
