Prior to joining HEC in 2016, I spent eight years in the industry. My last industry work was with\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.ch\/jobs\/zurich\/\">Google<\/a>\u00a0in Zurich, Switzerland. Previously, I worked at Telefonica Research with\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nuriaoliver.com\/\">Nuria Oliver<\/a>\u00a0and Rodrigo de Oliveira, in Barcelona, Spain. I received my PhD in Computer Science from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epfl.ch\/\">EPFL<\/a>), Switzerland in June 2008, where I worked for the\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/craft.epfl.ch\/\">CRAFT<\/a>\u00a0laboratory, under the supervision of\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/craft.epfl.ch\/page21625.html\">Pierre Dillenbourg<\/a>. At EPFL, I conducted research on collaborative annotations of maps and remote gesturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Previously, I worked for two and a half years as a\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mle.ie\/people\/bio.php?id=30\">research assistant<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mle.ie\/\">Media Lab Europe<\/a>\u00a0(MLE), in Ireland, under the supervision of\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.carolstrohecker.info\/\">Carol Strohecker<\/a>. During this time, I had several study visits at the\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.media.mit.edu\/\">MIT Media Lab<\/a>\u00a0in Boston. I obtained a Master of Arts by Research from\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spd.dcu.ie\/\">St. Patrick\u2019s College<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dcu.ie\/\">Dublin City University<\/a>, in 2004. My master thesis documented the work I conducted at MLE on\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.i-cherubini.it\/mauro\/projects\/biosphera\/thesis\">Microworlds for Ecology Explorations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In my former life, I founded a Non-Governmental Organization\u00a0to sustain elderly and autistic children in the region south of Rome, Italy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"interests\" class=\"\">\n<p class=\"p1\">My primary research interests are at the intersection of\u00a0<strong class=\"\">human-computer interaction<\/strong>\u00a0(<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human?computer_interaction\">HCI<\/a>),\u00a0<strong class=\"\">computer-supported cooperative work<\/strong>\u00a0(<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Computer_supported_cooperative_work\">CSCW<\/a>) and human learning. I seek to design systems that enable people to be better connected and in more flexible and dynamic ways. I am particularly interested in how to empower people through new technology and in giving them the opportunity to better participate in collective initiatives. I am also interested in\u00a0<strong class=\"\">persuasive computing<\/strong>\u00a0applications that can improve the users\u2019 experience of their daily activities, and propel positive changes in people\u2019s behaviour.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am a Professor of Information Systems at HEC, University of Lausanne.
