Dictionaries are not just for looking up definitions! They can also be used to check pronunciation. All dictionaries have the entries written out in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), which you hopefully remember from IELL! ?
Online dictionaries often have audio clips so that you can hear the word as well. Please be aware, however, that the suggested pronunciation usually refers to a standard dialect (either for British or American English, or sometimes for either of them), so you can’t rely on it for all varieties!
Here are a few online dictionaries you can check out:
- The Oxford English Dictionary for British English (you will need your Unil credentials to access the full site)
- Merriam-Webster for American English
- Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries (clips in British and North American English)
- Cambridge English Dictionary (clips in British and American English)
