La formule juridique convient particuli\u00e8rement bien au r\u00e9cit. Les r\u00e9cits agissent, sont efficaces entre autres raisons parce que nous les croyons. Et nous les croyons parce que, comme l\u2019ont enseign\u00e9 la philosophie du sens commun (Thomas Reid et le principe de cr\u00e9dulit\u00e9 : toute assertion est digne de cr\u00e9ance tant qu\u2019elle n\u2019a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9montr\u00e9e fausse) et, plus r\u00e9cemment, la psychologie cognitive (l\u2019existence d\u2019une disposition \u00e0 croire nos semblables, \u00e0 avoir confiance dans la v\u00e9racit\u00e9 des r\u00e9cits qui nous sont cont\u00e9s), notre pente naturelle est de croire ce que l\u2019on nous raconte. La th\u00e9orie des actes de langage d\u2019Austin, \u00e9labor\u00e9e par rapport au droit (qu\u2019il s\u2019agisse de l\u2019engagement du locuteur, des obligations contractuelles, qui se d\u00e9clarent avec l\u2019assertion, la promesse, etc.), les \u00ab implicatures conversationnelles \u00bb de Grice et la pragmatique renvoient alors aux questions de la d\u00e9termination des autorit\u00e9s et des narrateurs fiables (on peut ainsi r\u00e9interroger la tradition du&nbsp;<em>unreliable narrator&nbsp;<\/em>issue de la rh\u00e9torique narrative de Wayne Booth), de la confiance (entendue comme une attitude \u00e9pist\u00e9mique) que nous accordons \u00e0 ce que l\u2019on nous raconte et de la d\u00e9fiance (comme attitude trop co\u00fbteuse). Loin des probl\u00e9matiques trop usuelles du pouvoir, de la puissance d\u2019agir de la fiction ou du r\u00e9cit, le storytelling (pour ne citer que lui) peut ainsi \u00eatre repens\u00e9, dans ses versions orales comme \u00e9crites, au-del\u00e0 de la seule interpr\u00e9tation qui a pr\u00e9valu en France par la rationalit\u00e9 et la communication manipulatrices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Ce s\u00e9minaire de recherche portera \u00e9galement sur des r\u00e9cits \u2013 litt\u00e9raires ou non, contemporains ou non \u2013 charg\u00e9s d\u2019une forte promesse de performativit\u00e9, qu\u2019ils aient une orientation utopique ou dystopique. L\u2019injonction contemporaine \u00e0 \u00ab inventer de nouveaux r\u00e9cits \u00bb ne vise pas simplement \u00e0 renouveler les pratiques narratives, mais surtout \u00e0 faire advenir des changements sociaux par leur truchement. La question du statut fictionnel ou documentaire des \u0153uvres sera l\u2019un des th\u00e8mes r\u00e9currents de la r\u00e9flexion au fil des s\u00e9ances. La performativit\u00e9 peut en effet \u00eatre envisag\u00e9e comme une caract\u00e9ristique transformatrice, non seulement des \u00e9l\u00e9ments du r\u00e9cit, mais aussi du statut pragmatique de ce dernier : si la documentarit\u00e9 et la fictionnalit\u00e9 se jugent \u00e0 l\u2019aune du monde existant, qu\u2019en est-il du rapport des \u0153uvres narratives \u00e0 des mondes en gestation ? De William Gibson \u00e0 Fredric Jameson, ne dit-on pas des r\u00e9cits\u00a0<em>cyberpunk\u00a0<\/em>des ann\u00e9es 1980 qu\u2019ils ont proph\u00e9tis\u00e9, voire model\u00e9 le monde actuel ? On abordera donc la gen\u00e8se des \u00ab grands r\u00e9cits \u00bb du pass\u00e9 ainsi que leur r\u00f4le, r\u00e9el ou suppos\u00e9, de moteur de l\u2019histoire, mais aussi des initiatives actuelles, comme le projet Witnesspedia (https:\/\/scifieconomics.world\/), dont l\u2019objectif affirm\u00e9 est de raconter d\u2019autres futurs pour leur donner une chance d\u2019advenir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Narrative Performativities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Scribere est agere<\/em>. To speak is to act. The legal phrase is particularly suitable to narrative. Narratives act and produce effects because, among other things, we believe them. And we believe them because, as we know from the philosophy of common sense (Thomas Reid and the theory of credulity: every assertion is worthy of credence so long as it has not been proven false) and, more recently, from cognitive psychology (the predisposition to believe our fellow creatures, to have confidence in the veracity of the stories we are told), our natural inclination is to believe what is said to us. Austin\u2019s speech act theory, developed out of the law (be it the speaker\u2019s commitment or contractual obligations, expressed in the form of an assertion, a promise, etc.), Grice\u2019s conversational implicatures, and pragmatics thus relate to questions of determination by the authorities or by reliable narrators (consider the notion of unreliable narrator coming from Wayne Booth\u2019s narrative rhetoric) of the confidence (understood as an epistemic stance) we attribute to what is said to us and to defiance (too costly a stance). Far from the ordinary questions of power and the capacity for action of fiction or narrative, storytelling (to take but one example) might be looked at anew \u2013 both in its oral and written versions \u2013 extending beyond its interpretation as manipulative rationality and communication, a position that has prevailed in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s research seminar will also take account of narratives \u2013 literary or otherwise, contemporary or not \u2013 that are highly performative in nature, be they utopian or dystopian. The contemporary pressure to \u201cinvent new stories\u201d aims not merely at the renewal of narrative practices but especially at bringing about social change. The question of the fictional or documentary status of works will thus be one of the recurrent themes for debate during the meetings. Performativity can be regarded as a transformative feature not only of narrative itself but also of its pragmatic status: if documentarity and fictionality are judged in terms of the existing world, what can we say about how narrative works relate to worlds in gestation? From William Gibson to Fredric Jameson, has it not been said of the cyberpunk narratives of the 1980s that they prophesied or even modeled the world of today?
