Ever wondered what goes on inside Unil’s stationary store? Well we went to find Enrico in his colorful little shop, and he graciously accepted to answer a few questions for us. Read on to learn about Enrico’s everyday life and you’ll never pass by his store without saying hello again<\/em>! [version fran\u00e7aise en-dessous]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you introduce yourself and say a few words about your job?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My name is Enrico. I\u2019ve always worked in mechanics, and now I\u2019m here because I found this job for my wife, it\u2019s her professional field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For how many years have you been working in the University of Lausanne, and how did you end up here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has been 15-16 years. I took this job with my wife and now that we\u2019re retired, we keep working here because we enjoy it, we want to be in contact with people, rather than being confined at home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does the usual workday look like? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In general, my wife comes in the morning and, as a sleeper, I come between 10:00 and 12:00. Then we wait for people to come and go. But there\u2019s very few people coming now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since when did you notice that?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since we closed for a year due to Covid-19. Even with the reopening there\u2019s less students around, because lots of them still study at home. Besides, students are now used to working without paper, without supplies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you sell the most?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything and anything, we sell everything that is useful in a university. Some things go faster than others, but it\u2019s hard to say which ones, and it changes over time. For example, we used to bind books a lot, because the Reprographie only made copies and we bound them. But now they’re making copies that are already bound\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That could be interesting to some students! Do you still do bindings?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We still do, but very few. But we have plastic or metal spiral bindings of all sizes, and we also make glued bindings. And it\u2019s cheaper than in other shops in the city (because, you know, sometimes we check the market prices).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the advantages of working here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a good way to spend time and to have some human interaction, I\u2019ve always liked that. Some students come just to have a coffee and chat, because they can tell I also enjoy having a talk. It\u2019s something that has always been part of my life: I\u2019ve coached football teams, trained apprentices when I was working as a mechanic, … This desire to socialize is something that comes back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So you like students? They are polite and respectful to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students are generally decent with us, sometimes someone will be [pause; probably meaning \u201ca bit unpleasant\u201d], but it\u2019s rare. In principle, when you\u2019re decent to someone they repay you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are some disadvantages of your job?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There aren\u2019t. I mean, the margins we make are really thin, so as long as we\u2019re working here and don\u2019t need the money to live, it\u2019s going to continue. But if someone comes here after us, they\u2019ll be younger and they\u2019ll need a decent salary, because my wife and I never took a proper salary. So if it doesn\u2019t make enough money, sooner or later the shop will have to shut down, that\u2019s how it goes\u2026 But as for us, we\u2019re happy here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So you\u2019re thinking about leaving?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, my wife and I are thinking about working for a few more months and then we might put up an offer\u2026 Then instead of spending our time here, we\u2019ll be able to travel around for 3 or 4 days at a time, see a city and then another. In the end, you can meet people just as well when travelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did COVID impact you personally?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It impacted me like everyone else. Having to stay home, you learn to stay inside. And now it\u2019s nice to be back and to see people again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I agree! Finally, is there something you\u2019d like to say to students?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have to study if you want to get somewhere, today even a university degree is not always enough. You have to constantly challenge yourself. For example, when I was working [as a mechanic], every time there was something new, I\u2019d go and take an evening class, because you can\u2019t do things you know nothing about. That\u2019s why I think the most important thing is to have solid bases in life, and then question yourself whenever it\u2019s necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mon nom c\u2019est Enrico. J\u2019ai toujours travaill\u00e9 dans la m\u00e9canique, et maintenant je suis l\u00e0 parce que j\u2019ai trouv\u00e9 ce travail pour ma femme, c\u2019est son domaine \u00e0 elle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depuis combien de temps travaillez-vous \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Lausanne, et comment \u00eates-vous arriv\u00e9 ici ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c7a fait 15-16 ans. On avait pris ce travail ensemble, ma femme et moi, et maintenant qu\u2019on est \u00e0 la retraite on l\u2019a gard\u00e9 parce qu\u2019on aime \u00e7a, on aime pas rester enferm\u00e9s \u00e0 la maison, on a envie de rester en contact avec les gens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A quoi ressemble votre journ\u00e9e de travail habituellement ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

En g\u00e9n\u00e9ral ma femme vient le matin et moi qui suis dormeur je viens vers 10-12h. Apr\u00e8s on attend que les gens viennent et puis qu\u2019ils s\u2019en aillent. Mais actuellement il y a tr\u00e8s peu de monde. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depuis quand avez-vous remarqu\u00e9 qu\u2019il y a moins de monde ? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depuis que \u00e7a a ferm\u00e9 pendant une ann\u00e9e \u00e0 cause du covid. M\u00eame avec la r\u00e9ouverture il y a beaucoup moins d\u2019\u00e9tudiants, il y en a encore beaucoup qui travaillent \u00e0 la maison. Et puis maintenant ils sont habitu\u00e9s \u00e0 travailler sans papier, sans mat\u00e9riel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quel est le produit que vous vendez le plus?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tout et n\u2019importe quoi, tout ce qui est utile \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9. Il y a des choses qui partent plus vite mais c\u2019est difficile \u00e0 dire lesquelles, et \u00e7a change avec le temps. Par exemple on faisait beaucoup de reliures ici avant, parce que la reprographie faisait que des copies et nous on faisait les reliures. Mais maintenant ils font des copies d\u00e9j\u00e0 reli\u00e9es\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c7a pourrait int\u00e9resser certain.e.s \u00e9tudiant.e.s de savoir \u00e7a ! Vous faites toujours des reliures ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On en fait encore quelques-unes, tr\u00e8s tr\u00e8s peu. Mais on a des reliures en spirales plastique ou m\u00e9tal de toutes les tailles, et on fait aussi des reliures coll\u00e9es, et c\u2019est moins cher qu\u2019en ville (parce que de temps en temps on se renseigne sur les prix du march\u00e9).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quels sont les avantages de votre travail ici ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

C\u2019est un bon passe-temps pour avoir un contact humain, moi j\u2019ai toujours aim\u00e9 \u00e7a. Il y a des \u00e9tudiants qui viennent juste pour parler en prenant un caf\u00e9 parce qu\u2019ils voient que j\u2019aime bien le contact. C\u2019est quelque chose qui a toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent dans ma vie : j\u2019ai entra\u00een\u00e9 des \u00e9quipes de football, j\u2019ai eu des apprentis quand je travaillais, cette envie de sociabiliser c\u2019est quelque chose qui revient. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donc vous appr\u00e9ciez les \u00e9tudiants et les \u00e9tudiantes ? Ils et elles sont polies et respectueuses avec vous ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les \u00e9tudiants, ils sont assez corrects avec nous, de temps en temps il y a quelqu\u2019un de [pause; signifiant probablement \u201cun peu d\u00e9sagr\u00e9able\u201d], mais c\u2019est rare. En principe, quand on est correct avec les gens ils nous le rendent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quels sont les d\u00e9savantages de votre travail ici ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il y en a pas. Apr\u00e8s les marges sont tr\u00e8s petites, donc tant que c\u2019est nous qui sommes l\u00e0 et qu\u2019on vit pas de \u00e7a, \u00e7a va continuer. Mais si quelqu\u2019un reprend ce sera des personnes un peu plus jeunes et il leur faudra une paye, parce que ma femme et moi on a jamais pris une vraie paye. Si le volume de caisse est trop bas, t\u00f4t ou tard ils seront destin\u00e9s \u00e0 fermer, parce que c\u2019est comme \u00e7a\u2026 Mais nous on est contents ici.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vous pensez donc \u00e0 arr\u00eater?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oui, avec ma femme on pense travailler encore quelques mois et apr\u00e8s peut-\u00eatre qu\u2019on mettra une annonce [pour trouver quelqu\u2019un d\u2019autre] \u2026 Apr\u00e8s au lieu de passer le temps \u00e0 la papeterie on pourra faire des petits voyages de 3-4 jours, voir une ville quelques jours puis une autre. Au final en voyageant on voit du monde la m\u00eame chose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comment le COVID vous a-t-il affect\u00e9 personnellement ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il m\u2019a affect\u00e9 comme tout le monde. Devoir rester \u00e0 la maison, on apprend \u00e0 rester enferm\u00e9. Et maintenant \u00e7a fait plaisir de retourner au travail et de voir du monde ! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je suis d\u2019accord ! Finalement, avez-vous un message pour les \u00e9tudiants et les \u00e9tudiantes ?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il faut \u00e9tudier, si vous voulez arriver \u00e0 quelque chose de nos jours m\u00eame un dipl\u00f4me universitaire c\u2019est pas toujours suffisant. Il faut se remettre en question continuellement dans la vie. Moi par exemple quand je travaillais [comme m\u00e9canicien], chaque fois qu\u2019il y avait des nouveaut\u00e9s j\u2019allais faire des cours du soir, parce qu\u2019on peut pas faire des choses quand on les conna\u00eet pas. C\u2019est pour \u00e7a que je dis que l\u2019important c\u2019est d\u2019avoir des bases tr\u00e8s solides dans la vie et apr\u00e8s se remettre une question \u00e0 chaque fois que c\u2019est n\u00e9cessaire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
