Could you say a few words about yourself, who you are, and why you are here?<\/b><\/p>\n

My name is Bob Martin, I’m the university shepherd, and I’ve been looking after the sheep at the university since about 2013-2014. I’m in my forties, and then before this fabulous job I was a car mechanic. Yes, a radical change of profession, because I was a bit fed up with it, I felt that I had done all I could with that job, and then I wanted to work with animals, especially dogs. That’s where I found this job that does a bit of both.<\/span><\/p>\n

How long have you been looking after sheep?<\/b><\/p>\n

I’ve been looking after sheep since I started here. It was all new to me. So since 2011 I’ve been in the sheep business a bit, and then in 2014 I took over the university flock.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is there a certain breed of sheep, a certain kind of sheep that you have?<\/b><\/p>\n

Yes, I currently have two breeds of sheep: the <\/span>Nez-Noirs du Valais<\/span><\/i> and the <\/span>Roux du Valais<\/span><\/i>. The <\/span>Roux du Valais<\/span><\/i> were originally endangered and the <\/span>Nez-Noirs<\/span><\/i> I chose for aesthetics, because I love them and they’re a bit like plushies. I thought it would be nice to have a couple of plushies around the university.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What do they look like? How do we recognize them?<\/b><\/p>\n

Well, the <\/span>Nez-Noirs<\/span><\/i> are quite easy, hence their name: they are all white with black noses and then they have black spots on all their joints. And then the <\/span>Roux du Valais<\/span><\/i> are red. And the little bonus of these two breeds is that the females and the males have horns.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oh yes! Because here I see some of them and they all have horns!<\/b><\/p>\n

Yes, they (\u201c<\/span>elles<\/span><\/i>\u201d, <\/span>French feminine form<\/span><\/i>) all have horns.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ah, they are all females! And I see that you also use dogs. How do you work with them?<\/b><\/p>\n

I have three dogs at the moment. I have a little bitch who is 5 months old that I have to train to take over for my very old dog [<\/span>a dog suddenly becomes concerned and bark<\/span><\/i>s] who is now 11 years old. And then there’s Will who\u2019s in the middle, who is 7 years old, he turned 7 this weekend by the way. I always work with two dogs and then I always have a ‘spare’ one in case one gets hurt [<\/span>it\u2019s still barking<\/span><\/i>] or for other situations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do the sheep have names? Or numbers? How are they recognised? What do you call them?<\/b><\/p>\n

Officially they have a number, a BDTA number. They are registered in a Swiss database. And then all the sheep that have papers have a name and all my favourites have a name too. Let’s say that out of the 260 that I have, there are about a hundred that have names, but I don’t know them all by heart.<\/span><\/p>\n

So are there some sheep that have a personality, that you can recognise, [<\/b>the little dog barks<\/i><\/b>] with whom you have a more special relationship?<\/b><\/p>\n

Absolutely, yes! So I do have what we call my favourite. Punky, she\u2019s called. And she’s also the one I take to classes, to schools, for example, because she’s quite calm [<\/span>the little dog really wants attention and barks again<\/span><\/i>], and that’s what’s so nice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Is she the little one?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Yes, I haven’t taught her to stop barking yet. We’ll make do. <\/span>He laughs<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Are there any misconceptions about sheep, or anything we don’t know at all? Something we think about sheep that is not true?<\/b><\/p>\n

I would say the first misconception is that we always say that we are as stupid as a sheep or that we follow like a sheep. And it’s true that we follow like a sheep, because they are animals who live in a herd. But they are far from stupid, I noticed. When you live with them every day, you can see that they all have their own character, and sometimes their own strong ideas. So that’s what I also find nice about sheep.<\/span><\/p>\n

Very interesting answer! And why are the sheep at UNIL specifically?<\/b><\/p>\n

Well, there are sheep everywhere, but it’s also a bit of an emblematic model of the university. Back in the day, UNIL’s land was agricultural land and when they designed the first buildings, they decided to keep this system of sheep on the site. I think the sheep have been on the site since before we were born. I’m the third or fourth shepherd at the university. The sheepfold where the sheep are in winter – I bring them in between Christmas, New Year, until the first of April – this sheepfold that’s just behind us has always been there, so it’s really an iconic building of the university. It was built at the same time as the university buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n

How do you decide where to put your sheep? Is there a schedule? Do you rotate them around the different parts of the campus?<\/b><\/p>\n

Yes, we have a plot plan of about 45 plots for grazing on the university. Depending on the season, the growth of the grass, the work on the site, the events, and everything else around the university, we try to organise ourselves as best we can to graze these plots. We go on the plots between two and three times a year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Are the sheep divided into small groups, or do they usually stay in groups of 260?<\/b><\/p>\n

Now we have two flocks. There’s a small flock for the small plots of eight to ten sheep, and there’s a large flock that’s between thirty and forty sheep for the large plots.<\/span><\/p>\n

How did your partnership with UNIL start?<\/b><\/p>\n

I trained as a shepherd at Ch\u00e2teauneuf, and in this training there was the lady who looked after the sheep at the university. That’s how I got into the system and I had the opportunity to take over the flock.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wonderful, so you are the successor! Do you use sheep as “natural mowers” elsewhere or only at UNIL?<\/b><\/p>\n

Well, of my 260 sheep, between 30 and 50 graze at UNIL during the season. With the rest of the sheep, I use exactly the same system in Geneva’s communes, or for the army, for the road service, for civil protection, for many other institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Est-ce que vous pourriez dire quelques mots sur vous, sur qui vous \u00eates, sur pourquoi vous \u00eates l\u00e0 ?<\/b><\/p>\n

Je m\u2019appelle Bob Martin, je suis le berger de l\u2019universit\u00e9, et puis \u00e7a fait environ depuis 2013-2014 que je m\u2019occupe des moutons \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9. J\u2019ai une quarantaine d\u2019ann\u00e9es, et puis avant ce fabuleux m\u00e9tier j\u2019\u00e9tais m\u00e9canicien automobile. Oui, changement radical de m\u00e9tier, parce que j\u2019en avais un peu marre, je sentais que j\u2019avais fait le tour de ce m\u00e9tier-l\u00e0, et puis je voulais travailler \u00e0 la base avec les animaux, et surtout les chiens. C\u2019est l\u00e0 o\u00f9 j\u2019ai trouv\u00e9 ce m\u00e9tier qui fait un peu les deux.<\/span><\/p>\n

Depuis quand vous occupez-vous de moutons ?<\/b><\/p>\n

Alors j’ai commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 m\u2019occuper de moutons en m\u00eame temps que j\u2019ai commenc\u00e9 ici. C’\u00e9tait tout nouveau pour moi. Donc depuis 2011 je suis un peu dans le monde des moutons, et puis depuis 2014 j\u2019ai repris le troupeau de l\u2019universit\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

Est-ce qu\u2019il y a une certaine race de moutons, une certaine esp\u00e8ce de moutons que vous avez ?<\/b><\/p>\n

Alors oui, moi j\u2019ai actuellement deux races de moutons: il y a les Nez-Noirs du Valais et les Roux du Valais. Les Roux du Valais \u00e9taient \u00e0 la base en voie de disparition et puis les Nez Noirs, je les ai surtout pris pour l\u2019esth\u00e9tique, parce que je les adore et c\u2019est un peu des peluches. Je me suis dit que \u00e7a ferait bien autour de l\u2019universit\u00e9 d\u2019avoir deux trois peluches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A quoi est-ce qu\u2019ils ressemblent ? Comment est-ce qu\u2019on les reconna\u00eet ?<\/b><\/p>\n

Alors les Nez Noirs c\u2019est assez facile, d\u2019o\u00f9 leur nom: ils sont tout blancs avec le nez noir et puis ils ont les taches de toutes les articulations qui sont noires. Et puis les Roux du Valais sont roux. Et le petit plus de ces deux races l\u00e0, c\u2019est que les femelles et les m\u00e2les ont des cornes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ah oui ! Parce que l\u00e0 j\u2019en vois quelques-uns qui ont tous des cornes !<\/b><\/p>\n

Oui, <\/span>elles <\/span><\/i>ont toutes des cornes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ah ce sont toutes des femelles !<\/b> Et je vois que vous utilisez aussi des chiens. Comment travaillez-vous ?<\/b><\/p>\n

Alors l\u00e0 j\u2019ai actuellement trois chiens. J\u2019ai une petite chienne qui a 5 mois que je dois \u00e9duquer pour la rel\u00e8ve pour ma toute vieille chienne [<\/span>un chien se sent tout d\u2019un coup concern\u00e9 et aboie<\/span><\/i>] de maintenant 11 ans. Et puis il y a le juste milieu Will, qui a 7 ans, qui a eu 7 ans ce weekend d\u2019ailleurs. Et puis je travaille toujours avec deux chiens et puis j\u2019en ai toujours un \u00ab\u00a0de r\u00e9serve\u00a0\u00bb au cas o\u00f9 il y en a un qui est bless\u00e9 [<\/span>et il aboie encore<\/span><\/i>] ou pour d\u2019autres situations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Est-ce que les moutons ont des noms ? Ou des num\u00e9ros ? Comment est-ce qu\u2019on les reconna\u00eet ? Comment on les appelle ?<\/b><\/p>\n

Officiellement, ils ont un num\u00e9ro, un num\u00e9ro BDTA. Ils sont enregistr\u00e9s dans une base de donn\u00e9es suisse. Et puis apr\u00e8s tous les moutons qui ont des papiers ont un nom et puis toutes mes pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9es ont un nom aussi. On va dire que sur les 260 que j\u2019ai, il y en a une centaine qui ont des noms, mais je ne le sais pas tous par c\u0153ur.<\/span><\/p>\n

Donc il y a quand m\u00eame certains moutons qui ont une personnalit\u00e9, qu\u2019on peut reconna\u00eetre, [<\/b>la petite chienne aboie] <\/i><\/b>avec qui vous avez une relation plus particuli\u00e8re ?<\/b><\/p>\n

Tout \u00e0 fait oui ! Alors j\u2019ai toujours ce qu\u2019on appelle ma pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e.<\/span> Punky, elle s\u2019appelle. Et puis c\u2019est elle aussi que je prends par exemple dans les classes, dans les \u00e9coles parce qu\u2019elle est assez calme [<\/span>la petite chienne a vraiment envie d\u2019attention et aboie encore<\/span><\/i>], et puis c\u2019est \u00e7a qui est chouette.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

C\u2019est elle la toute petite ?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Oui, je ne lui ai pas encore appris \u00e0 arr\u00eater d\u2019aboyer. On fera avec. <\/span>Il rit.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Est-ce qu\u2019il y a des id\u00e9es re\u00e7ues sur les moutons, ou quelque chose qu\u2019on ne sait pas du tout ? Quelque chose qu\u2019on pense des moutons alors que c\u2019est pas du tout vrai ?<\/b><\/p>\n

Je dirais la premi\u00e8re id\u00e9e re\u00e7ue, on dit toujours qu\u2019on est b\u00eate comme un mouton ou qu\u2019on suit comme un mouton. Alors qu\u2019on suit comme un mouton, c\u2019est vrai parce que c\u2019est quand m\u00eame des animaux qui vivent en troupeau. Mais ils sont quand m\u00eame loin d\u2019\u00eatre b\u00eates, j\u2019ai remarqu\u00e9. Quand on vit tous les jours avec eux, on voit qu\u2019ils ont tous leur caract\u00e8re, et puis aussi des fois leurs id\u00e9es bien tranch\u00e9es. Donc c\u2019est \u00e7a que je trouve aussi sympa dans les moutons.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressant comme r\u00e9ponse! Et pourquoi les moutons sont \u00e0 l\u2019UNIL sp\u00e9cifiquement?<\/b><\/p>\n

Alors, il y a des moutons partout mais c\u2019est aussi un peu le mod\u00e8le embl\u00e9matique de l\u2019universit\u00e9. A l\u2019\u00e9poque, le terrain de l\u2019UNIL \u00e9tait des terres agricoles et quand ils ont dessin\u00e9 les premiers b\u00e2timents, ils ont d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de garder ce syst\u00e8me de moutons sur le site. Je pense que les moutons sont sur le site depuis avant qu\u2019on soit n\u00e9s. Je suis le troisi\u00e8me ou le quatri\u00e8me berger de l\u2019universit\u00e9. La bergerie o\u00f9 les moutons sont en hiver – je les rentre entre No\u00ebl, nouvel an, jusqu’au premier avril – cette bergerie qui se trouve juste derri\u00e8re nous a toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u00e0, donc c\u2019est vraiment un b\u00e2timent embl\u00e9matique de l\u2019universit\u00e9. Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite en m\u00eame temps que les b\u00e2timents universitaires.<\/span><\/p>\n

Comment d\u00e9cidez-vous d\u2019o\u00f9 placer vos moutons? Est-ce qu\u2019il y a un planning? On les fait tourner sur les diff\u00e9rentes parties du campus?<\/b><\/p>\n

Oui, on a un plan parcellaire d\u2019environ 45 parcelles pour brouter sur l\u2019universit\u00e9. En fonction de la saison, de la pousse de l\u2019herbe, des travaux sur le site, des manifestations, de tout ce qu\u2019il y a autour de l\u2019universit\u00e9, on essaye de s\u2019organiser au mieux pour p\u00e2turer ces parcelles. On passe entre deux \u00e0 trois fois par ann\u00e9e sur les parcelles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Est-ce que les moutons sont divis\u00e9s en petits groupes, ou ils restent g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement en groupe de 260?<\/b><\/p>\n

Maintenant on fait deux troupeaux. Il y a un petit troupeau pour les petites parcelles entre huit et dix t\u00eates, et il y a un grand troupeau qui est entre trente et quarante t\u00eates pour les grandes parcelles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Comment a commenc\u00e9 votre partenariat avec l\u2019UNIL?<\/b><\/p>\n

Alors, pour la petite histoire, j\u2019ai fait la formation de berger \u00e0 Ch\u00e2teauneuf, et dans cette formation il y avait la dame qui s\u2019occupait des moutons \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9. Par ce biais-l\u00e0 je suis rentr\u00e9 dans ce syst\u00e8me et j\u2019ai eu l\u2019opportunit\u00e9 de reprendre le troupeau.<\/span><\/p>\n

Magnifique, donc vous \u00eates le successeur! Est-ce que vous utilisez des moutons comme \u201ctondeuses naturelles\u201d autre part aussi ou qu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019UNIL?<\/b><\/p>\n

Alors, de mes 260 moutons, il y en a entre 30 et 50 qui p\u00e2turent \u00e0 l\u2019UNIL \u00e0 la saison. Avec le reste des moutons, je fais exactement le m\u00eame syst\u00e8me dans des communes genevoises, ou pour l\u2019arm\u00e9e, pour le service des routes, pour la protection civile, pour plein d\u2019autres institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n
