{"id":4874,"date":"2022-12-02T10:13:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-02T09:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/metis\/?p=4874"},"modified":"2022-12-04T10:21:10","modified_gmt":"2022-12-04T09:21:10","slug":"call-for-papers-11th-international-esprit-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/metis\/2022\/12\/call-for-papers-11th-international-esprit-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for papers | 11th International ESPRit Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4196 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.unil.ch\/metis\/files\/2021\/10\/Capture-de\u0301cran-2021-10-18-a\u0300-15.05.58-300x202.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"116\" height=\"84\" \/>Periodicals and Belonging<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">27-29 June 2023<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">Leeds School of Arts, Leeds Beckett University, UK<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">ESPRit 2023 conference will be held in Leeds, UK, on the theme of\u00a0<b><i>Periodicals and Belonging<\/i><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">This fruitful and timely theme is designed to encourage discussions and collaborations on the ways that ideas, emotions, declarations and imaginings, of belonging or not belonging, manifest in relation to periodical production and reception.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espr-it.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>More information<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The notion of belonging to a family, a local culture, a national, regional and international group, or a diaspora, including a host of cultural and political ideas, is intrinsic to periodical studies, as is research on communities of\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">authors\/contributors,<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0readers, literature and the arts, history, cultural history, linguistics, sociology and memory studies amongst other disciplines. Constitutive to\u00a0<b>belonging<\/b>, is the notion of\u00a0<b>not belonging<\/b>, and as such, we are interested in exploring themes of exclusion, forms of othering, racialisation, agonism and conflict.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The conference aims to further problematise concepts of association and organisation such as communities (e.g. \u2018imagined communities\u2019, \u2018interpretive communities\u2019), groups etc., to periodical readerships; enquire into notions of belonging as oppression (periodical policing of boundaries, identities or stereotypes); the use of belonging in marketing\/advertising of periodicals, and the role of labour in periodical production (e.g., staff who belong loyally to one publication versus freelance journalists who sell their labour to many titles). Lastly, the conference will consider periodicals as visual and material objects that belong to certain places and spaces (e.g., when used as props or symbols by artists, photographers, film directors and others, or in dentists\u2019 waiting rooms), as well as in circulation and movement across geopolitical locations and chronological periods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">We are particularly interested in exploring:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Periodical groups and communities (diasporas; artistic; literary; feminist; LGBTQ\/H; and, or ethnic groups\/cultures; language variants (dialects and sociolects, slang, etc); children; youth; subcultures; identities; academic fields; social, political and professional communities)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Periodical communities of readers (explored through case studies and\/or specifics and\/or theoretically), including genres, formats, classifications or hierarchies; in relation to geography and geopolitics (local, regional national, European, \u2018Western\u2019, &#8216;other&#8217;, residents, indigenous, host, exiles, expatriates, colonisers and colonised, migrants and refugees whilst simultaneously interrogate notions of home, homeland, Heimat and terroir, mobility and [im]mobility).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The conference is hosted by the\u00a0<b>Leeds School of Arts, Leeds Beckett University<\/b>, in partnership with the University of Central Lancashire in the UK.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">We aim for linguistic inclusiveness by welcoming multilingual presentations with primary material in the original language accompanied by a translation into English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">We welcome proposals from researchers at all career stages.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0Proposals of around 250 words (references not included) for 20-minute papers and a short CV (no more than 200 words) should be sent to\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"mailto:ESPRit23@leedsbeckett.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"0\"><b>ESPRit23@leedsbeckett.ac.uk<\/b><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\">. The deadline for abstracts is 31 January 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">We also welcome proposals for joint panels of three papers, and for round tables or other formats.
