Although unquestionably all-pervasive within the history of modern and
\ncontemporary press, the \u2018review form\u2019 has been to present an
\nunderstudied practice. In fact, this multi-faceted, cross-disciplinary
\nform that has persistently accompanied the different phases in the
\nevolution of \u201cprint-capitalism\u201d has hardly been analysed from a
\ntheoretical perspective. This dismissal by the academic world is
\ncertainly peculiar, if not manifestly contradictory; however, it
\nsignificantly testifies of the difficulty of investigating such a
\nslippery object of study critically.<\/p>\n

The very \u2018physiognomy\u2019 of the book or film review, inherently wavering
\nbetween the duty to inform and the needs of the market, influenced as it
\nis by the definition of \u2018taste\u2019, makes this form difficult to tackle
\nwith a sound methodological approach. Since the beginning of the XVIII
\ncentury, the book and film review has proved to be an essential
\ninterface between cultural supply and demand, and it has always been
\nsomething more than a weapon to reach fame and recognition. Depending of
\nthe position gained in the literary or film fields, the review has often
\ndetermined the success or failure of a creative enterprise, of a name or
\nreputation. This particular device has been the yardstick of the most
\ndiverse sensibilities and tempers, from the learned expert to the
\npassionate amateur. In this, its proliferation has foreshadowed the
\nchanges in the reception processes of works no longer provided with an
\n\u2018aura\u2019 and therefore prone to the whims of a mass audience, whose
\njudgments ultimately assessed their value.<\/p>\n

For these reasons, it is hard to trace the evolution of the \u2018review
\nform\u2019 from a single point of view while focusing on the mechanisms that
\nhave triggered its fortune. As a crucial touchstone of intellectual
\nproduction, the review still performs its essential normative function,
\ncontributing to outlining the ever-evolving \u201chorizon of expectations\u201d of
\nits audiences, often identified with an ideal corpus which should
\nepitomise a shared canon. On the other hand, as a social process, the
\nreview tends to keep track of the continuing dialectics between
\nmainstream aesthetic values and their renegotiation in distinct contexts
\nand\/or communities of consumption.<\/p>\n

In the light of the rapidly-changing scenario of media and technologies,
\nthe conference \u201cBook Reviews and Beyond\u201d aims at exploring this
\ncompelling area of research in accordance with the interdisciplinary
\nperspective of periodical studies, with particular focus on the period
\nfrom the eighteenth century to the turn of the new millennium.<\/p>\n

The topics that will be discussed include, but are by no means be
\nlimited to:<\/p>\n

the formats of the review and its relevant features;
\nthe history of the review in the modern and contemporary publishing
\nindustry;
\nthe types and subgenres of the review;
\nart, film, music, theatre, videogame reviews;
\nthe symbolic status of the review;
\nmethods of analysis and theories of the review;
\nappropriations and declinations of the \u2018review form\u2019 in different
\ndisciplinary areas;
\nthe review and the building of the canon;
\nthe language of reviews (styles, lexical choices, discursive practices);
\nthe new modes of the review in the digital era.<\/p>\n

Please submit a 350-500 words abstract (with brief author bio and
\naffiliation, 100 words)\u00a0 in English or Italian by 1 March 2020 to
\nbeyondbookreview2020@gmail.com.<\/p>\n

Panel submissions are welcome. Panel proposals should include no more
\nthan 4 papers in total, a short description (300 words) together with
\nabstracts for each of the papers (150-200 words each including details
\nof the contributor), and the name and contact details of the panel
\nproposer. The panel proposer should coordinate the submissions for that
\npanel as a single proposal.<\/p>\n

Proposals will be read and evaluated by 25 March 2020. The time of
\ndelivery for each paper should be no more than 20 minutes.
\nDetails regarding the registration procedure and fees for the accepted
\nproposals will be notified after the evaluation process.<\/p>\n

\nspeakers are kindly requested to provide slides in English.<\/p>\n
